Default Cylinder Head Temp - Display & possibly track(?)

Hoping to get some help from the RennList brain trust.

A friend is looking for low-cost option for displaying (at a minimum) and possibly tracking(?) cylinder head temperature on at least two cylinders of a 911 SC 3.0 liter engine. He thinks he's solved the root cause of his intermittent high temp in one of his cylinders, but wants to be 100% sure following the recent engine rebuild.

Current thinking is the type of sensor that's like a washer under the spark plug, but having trouble finding correct device with long cable for dash mount and correct gauge. Would also like ideas on low-cost options to send data to a logger of some sort to be able to review data over time. A bonus would be an inexpensive system (used or maybe something easy to borrow) so he could display both a speed trace and temperature trace by lap (lowest cost used kart AIM device or some sort of equivalent). Fine with labor-intensive post-session approach using software like track attack if something like that is an option.

He does not expect to need/use this long-term, just for the first couple of events at tracks and conditions where he beleives he had the issue. He does not have a data acquisition system and at this point is not really interested in investing $500+ for one.

Ideas and links to available and in-stock items that you have experience with are greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I think the only sub $500 way I an think of is an old school CHT gauge. I'm not sure about the cable length. Doing anything to a car data logger will be real tough based on the price limit and would be very variable based on what you can find used.

The AiM kart loggers with CHT sensors won’t/can’t get an RPM signal from an automotive application to trigger logging, so that’s out.

Like Matt said, a simple CHT with a gauge and a GoPro to log using video is your budget best bet.

People get the kart loggers to get RPM, but they will be way more than $500 right now if you can find anything. Airplane gauge with Go Pro agreed.

Thanks. Good suggestion on putting the gauge in view of the GoPro video as he already has the camera.

I guess it was wishful thinking that older used kart systems might be able to work and also might have dropped significantly in price on the used market. Or that there were other inexpensive loggers that might work.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I thought Mark’s friend was looking for a CHT (under the plug) gauge?

The Dual gauge you linked is an EGT gauge.

Different temp range and requires a bung in the exhaust header. Not a simple install like rhe CHT.

Pegasus listed them all on one page and I didn't look close. Here is the dual cht https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catal...ges/c2-002.php

As a note, there are many ways to do EGT without a bung and they are very easy installs.

You were linking the Pegasus catalog. Looks better fixed though

Peter, great catch on the gauge in the Pegasus link being EGT not CHT.

Matt, thank you for taking the time and sending a new link to a CHT dual gauge.

some additional info for anyone looking todo this: (Thank you Dave D for sending this to us)

Attached are instructions from Westach that have a good explanation of the thermocouple hook up.

I like the Westach gauges. They have spark plug sensors, with 4 ft leads. It looks like they can be extended as long as the connection to the extra cable is made inside the passenger compartment so that it is at the same ambient temperature as the gauge. Westach also sells custom length wires with connectors that could be used as extensions.

I think the items above will give you a complete system.

It looks like an order can be placed directly on the westach web site rather than going through aircraft spruce.

Might want to think about how to mount the gauge before finalizing decision on which gauge to get.
