Default Beginner here - thinking about an orbital, what else do I need?

With eight cars to look after, time to step things up a bit.

Started here:
http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/...and+bag+kit.do

Then I find this:
http://www.ultimatedetailingmachine....lisher-na.html

AHHH, what to buy. Up until now I've been using one of those duel handled orbital's from the hardware store.
For polish, the Meguiars 3-step system.

I'm sure this is like asking "do these wheels fit" or "how do I make my car go faster" in the tech forums. I did a search, didn't find exactly what I'm looking for. Since I'm not sure what I'm looking for.....

Thanks!

That's a great price for the PC kit Philip.

A Porter Cable (PC) will be far more capable than any hardware store orbital and with the right pads, polish and wax you can make your paint look great.

The Griots Orbital is also excellent, I use one now although I wish I had something more powerful.

Colors and condition's vary.
Pearl white, black, dark brown, silver, and maroon.

The four black cars are all in need of a good swirl mark remover job, and the brown car (81-928) has very tired paint. I've been able to bring it back to life every spring, good 10' car. Some quarter size spots have developed on two body panels. With polishing they tone down a bit. I'm hoping to repaint this car soon.

What are the advantages of the PT over the Griots unit?

My #1 fear (as I'm sure it is with most people) is doing damage to the paint.

do you mean the pc?

I would either go with the pc or the griots ....the udm in my experience isn't all that great, at least the one that I have.

as for the paint I would go with Menzerna SIP and Menzerna PO106 and/or PO85rd( I love this for dark colored cars)

As for the 81 I'm guessing there is no clear on it. You may want to polish it out and then glaze it to fill the hills and valleys, that' the car I would be careful with as you can go thru the paint. (not knowing how much paint is left on there)

It's very difficult to do damage to the paint with an orbital with exception to soft plastic trim. RO's do a very small amount of work on paint and you would seriously need to mishandle the equipment (drop it on the paint etc) to do damage. I've used both the PC and Griots RO's and can say you can't go wrong with either. Make sure you get the velcro backing plate which is usually included but sometimes not from the cheaper sources.

Choosing the correct foams pads will also be important, don't skimp on these. Also remember that some products will only fill the swirls rather than actually removing them so pay attention and use the appropriate product for the paint you're dealing with.

If you've been able to correct your paints by hand in the past you'll be amazed what an RO can do. However if you have deeper scratches don't expect mirracles.

Yes, the PC, slight typo.. So for the most part, they PC and Griots are same?

Correct, no clear.
I did burn through a small spot in the paint using a small, cheap handheld orbiter on the side mirror housing, right on the edge. Hard to see unless the mirror is flipped out. So yes, this is a concern of mine.
