Indiana Sales Tax: Private Party Sale vs. Trade-in
Hi,
I'm waiting for my new daily driver to arrive at the dealer, so I have some time to plan out the sale of my S4. Being new to Indiana, I'm a little uncertain about the implications regarding the sales tax on the new car if I sell mine private party. In other states I've seen it handled a couple of different ways:
- "in and out" where effective I trade-in my car to the dealer who immediately resells it at the negotiated price to the buyer. This gets me the sales tax benefit of paying the difference between the new car price and the trade-in value.
- sell private party and if purchasing a new car w/in 30 days, use the bill of sale to effectively do the same thing, pay sales tax on the difference between the new car price and the value of the private party sale.
I haven't been able to find any info on the latter mechanism for Indiana, so curious if there is a similar provision here.
Thanks in advance!

I've never heard of anyone doing #1 but it doesn't sound completely implausible. I've never heard of someone doing that, but I suppose if you show up with a willing buyer and they're getting a good sale they may be willing to play ball?
As far as I know#2 does not exist in Indiana law.
