Question Oil change after 20,000 miles???

What is the group's consensus? I've been torn between 3000 vs. 5000 miles. But 20,000...

Please clue me in!

I asked my service rep about this, and he recommended changing oil every 20,000 miles or once a year if I was more comfortable with that. However, I really don't worry about this issue any more.

I have owned several vehicles with long oil change recommendations. The service reps consistently tell me that changing oil more frequently than recommended is a waste of money. I had an 00 ML430 that got an oil change every 12-14K miles, as dictated by the on-board computer. When I traded it, it had 50K miles and ran great. I wasn't asked how often I changed oil, and I doubt I would have gotten any more for it had I changed oil more frequently.

I doubt that Porsche would put such a long service interval on the Cayenne unless they were extremely confident in the number.

In very-hot Phoenix, the temperature-wise armpit of the Sonoran Desert, my dealer changes the 30KM (=18K-miles) to 9K-miles. That makes sense to me with the hi heat here. I've been using Mobil 1 in all my vehicles since 1987 (and M1 filters since they've been available) and currently am changing my Grandokee's oil somewhere in the 7K-miles range.

BTW, Walmart is now regularly stocking M1 in 5-quart bottles for $18.88 (= $3.78/quart). Costco also sells M1, in 6-packs, for about the same per-quart rate. Unfortunately, neither stocks 0-40, YET. I'm working on that.

Jeffrey, there is hope, my local Walmart stocks 0-40 M1. Though not in the 5-quart bottles...

Talked to my dealer about the oil change intervals. I'm used to doing it every 3000 miles, so the recommended every 15,000 seemed really hard to take. The dealer said that they recommend to their customers every 7,500 miles or 1 year. I might be able to stomach that interval a little better than every 15K.

The long interval oil changes might have something to do with a dry sump.

Less churn, les wear on oil...

When Mobil-1 was first introduced it was billed as an oil that could go 15,000 miles between oil changes. The rational was that a synthetic oil did not suffer the lubrication breakdown that a purely petroleum based oil would.

It was a hard sell but comparison tests did seem to bear out that a synthetic oil was much more resistant to breakdown.

There were still concerns about acid buildup with the oil staying in that long but modern engines warm up much faster and boil off the condensation that creates the acid so that was less of a concern.

So the oil might last that long but what about the oil filter? I am taking it on faith that Porsche, and the other manufactures that are recommending similar oil change intervals, have made improvements to the capicity and efficency of their filters to accomodate these longer oil change intervals.

I think environmental concerns are driving most of this. Longer intervals means less used oil to dispose of.
