Fascinating, I did not realize that. That explains why I can’t find it… Thanks so much!
Any thoughts on what could cause whining/groaning sound from steering? It’s eerily similar to the experience of a failing power steering pump or low fluid in a hydraulic system.
Both when stationary or when driving at slow speeds, but only happens very intermittently.
What do you think about brakes, axle shaft, water pump or wheel bearing? Wheel bearing can be diagnosed while driving at highway speed and swerving (safely) left and right and listening for changes in the sound.
Axle shaft usually is a clicking or knocking sound and can be turned on and off with steering or with increase/decrease of the accelerator pedal.
Thanks for the suggestions. But the sound seems to come very much from the steering column area. I will have it inspected by the dealer as soon as I can. Will update this thread when I have a diagnosis.
An update of sorts: the dealer thinks this noise is most likely caused by a piece of plastic trim or leather rubbing somewhere along the steering column. They offered to take it apart but cautioned that CPO would not cover the diagnosis nor the repair, unless it turned out to be a mechanical failure, which they doubt it is. I was none too pleased about that and declined. I may investigate further myself, or I may try another dealer. But for now the noise has gotten very infrequent - hasn’t really occurred during regular driving over the past few weeks - perhaps it is temperature dependent.
