Uneven Tire Wear

Default Uneven Tire Wear

I have a 20 Cayenne base with 21" wheel and 27,000 miles on it. The front passange side tire needs a replacement while the driver side tire is still fine, can probaly drive another 7,000 to 10,000 miles.
Also, the outside edge is worse than the inside edge on the bad tire.
I've never noticed any wheel alignment issue and never drove with low tire inflation.
What could be the cause of one side wearing out faster than the other side?
Should I take it to dealership for alignment check?

only an alignment check & readings will tell you the issue.

Do you rotate your tires? Easy to do if you have non-directional all-seasons—DO NOT do if you have max performance directional tires. I rotate my CS tires every 5-7 thousand miles; even though my SA says most Cayennes wear tires pretty evenly…

Rotate left and right?
Front and rear have different sizes

Yes, you definitely should have the alignment checked. When you say "you haven't noticed" any alignment issues, it doesn't take much of it being out to cause uneven wear. And they don't necessarily come well aligned from the factory.

Case in point...I had a 2017 GTI. I noticed that it had horrible traction off the line. I chalked it up to being a FWD car. Or so I thought. Brought the car in for it's second oil change at 12k miles and they tell me...you need new front tires. Keep in mind these were 500+ treadwear all seasons, and I'd been driving this car evenly. Plus, they didn't look worn.....Well, they were. On the INSIDE edge of the tire they were down to the belts! In 12k miles! They were so out of alignment it was ridiculous. VW Covered an alignment but wouldn't comp me tires. New alignment and proper tires were fitted and man, what a difference! No more burn outs at every stop light.

I've replaced the both front tires at 27000 miles althought the driver side had at least 5000 miles of tread left.
I have the base model with 21" wheel and I don't know what is the norm, but the rear tires still have 10000 to 15000 miles of tread.
Wheel alignmant cost at dealer is $490, but do they use Porsche specific machine or the same machine that everyone have?
What are your recommendation for wheel alignments?

Is this your first German SUV? Tire wear can be high (fast wear) because of toe and camber choices made by the manufacturer, in addition to tire compound choices. MB GL/GLS is a poster child for fast tread wear/short tire life.

Recommendation for alignment is to use the manufacturer’s specs. I have never owned a vehicle that needed alignment unless the suspension components (tie rods, ball joints) were clearly damaged.

I am not complaining about the fast wear, I had to replace all tires at 15000 miles on my 2004 Cayenne.
The top photo, passenger side, shows the uneven wear on the ouside edge, is that normal?

Uneven wear is not normal. Post the alignment print out the dealer gave you so we can see the before and after measurements.

They have the same equipment as everyone else.

AWD vehicles always have uneven wear, but they should be about the same Left/Right. Yours looks like it has either too much Toe (Most likely) or the Camber is off (less likely). Porsche puts big, fat meats on Cayennes so any alignment issues are exaggerated the wider the tire. Spring for an alignment, then you will know.

Agree that toe and camber are the contributors, and operator use case.

I am not seeing uneven wear in the OP photo. The tire is evenly worn on the outside edge. For a front tire, this suggests excessive toe for the use case.

Furthermore, modern traffic control patterns favor right turns, which for LHD markets requires the right (passenger) tire to travel a smaller turning radius, causing more wear.

@YHC what region in the world are you located, and are you in an urban or rural area?

I am in SO CAL, urban.
My wife drives it about 200 miles per week, 1/2 freeway, with normal driving habits.
