Am I out of touch?

Am I out of touch?
seems the base cayenne is far more expensive this time around. High 80s seems to be normal, I even saw a spec in excess of 100k posted on a thread. I was always under the perception that a base cayenne was a 70k vehicle. Are these first builds loaded up with options, was there a big price bump or was I wrong with my perception of previous generation pricing?

You're not out of touch - once you add a few desirable options to a BASE model the price quickly goes up. I built one and got to 90+. But one used a year or so later - depreciation will win out.

Porsche made a huge marketing decision when they added in the Macan. The Cayenne is now priced from 80+. If you want the <70, the Macan is the only choice. When the diesels came out in 2012 (2013 MY), I bought one of the first in the east coast. I kid you not, I bought new for $50K! It was not loaded, but still had some nice options and it was an amazing vehicle. I knew the GM as well, but Cayennes were looked differently then by Porsche.

Yeah the option pricing is insane. "The way I want it" has more $ in options than the price of some new cars.

We will be in the market for a family car soon, I really do want to continue my Pcar / Cayenne ownership, but the Macan is too small. The problem for me is justifying $112k (my S spec) vs a loaded X5 at $78k - $90k (6cyl or 8cyl). Just saying.

yup, major problem. I guess the one argument is somewhat higher resale on the Porsche, but don’t think it’s significant enough to justify the difference. The other would be how long do you keep the car? Beyond warranty I would go Porsche all day long. BMWs out of warranty are really bad and that’s coming from a guy who isn’t afraid of an out of warranty rover

That's what I was thinking of doing but the Porsche is such a better quality long term value it is hard to ignore.
It's going to be Pcar for me all the way ...

We had our S optioned to $125K before we stepped back and realized that was Turbo money. $31K in options on an $84K car was on the stupid end of the scale. That’s a decent third or fourth car by itself.

Agree completely. Based on our test-drives and real-world testing, the S isn’t much of an option on the new Cayenne. The e-Hybrid is the better overall choice — not necessarily for performance reasons (although it’s at least as fast as the S), but for fuel economy and technology.
