My wife and I are looking to get a tow vehicle for lugging an Airstream travel trailer around the USA and Canada for a few years, and I wanted to get folks opinion around the expected reliability of the 2017 Porsche Cayenne S. The other alternative would be a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk Diesel. (not looking to start a flame war on towing, just opinion of reliability of the 958 )
Looking through the forums, the fairly mature 958 platform as of 2015 hasn't had nearly as many issues as older platforms, but I wanted to get opinions. I'm especially concerned around the fact that Porsche garages are nowhere near as prevalent as Mopar, especially out in the middle of nowhere. We'd be factory ordering a 2017 Cayenne S with Air Suspension, PDCC, PTV+, Skid Plates, LED Headlights, etc.
Personally I'm not a fan of the Fiat Diesel, but the 5.7L HEMI is way too thirsty when towing - 11mpg HEMI vs. 15mpg Diesel. Other options we've considered include the Mercedes GL450 - awful ride and poor quality interior, F150/RAM1500 - awful ride and excessively large, Range Rover Sport - legendary (un)reliability.
Have you looked at a 2017 Nissan Armada? The '17 is no longer based on the Titan. It's a rebadged Nissan Patrol. The Patrol is a very capable machine. I tested this one Monday:
It's got an 8500 lb towing capacity. I looked at a Platinum with the second row captains chairs. Liked those a lot.
Haven't decided this is the route I will go, but I think it might be a good option for someone intent on towing a lot with their SUV.
The Porsche will probably be more unreliable but I guarantee it will be a helluva lot more fun to drive than the Jeep. Porsche's have a personality about them that keep buyers coming back. If you get yourself an extended warranty you should be fine, just make sure to dump the car before it becomes too problematic.
Make sure that you do your research on the Jeep diesel, I considered it at one point and learned that it isn't reliable nor is it good for resale.
Different car, but I get 15-16 mpg with my Cayenne Turbo pulling a trailer. And 21 mpg without trailer - all on the highway. For the HP and speed, it is very efficient.
