Default Wheels refinishing cost?

I am trying to refinish the wheels on my 958 turbo, I was quoted $880 for all 4 wheels (painted not powder coated). He also said that it will be $120 less if I just drop off wheels, i am guessing he is charging that 120 for dismount & mount the wheels.
Is that reasonable?. wheels are 21".

It's a deal. Paint is always better than powder coating and harder to do so the cost is right in line with a good deal.

Was quoted around $850 from a reputable shop so that sounds reasonable!

500 for all 4 wheels, including powder coating, dismounting and remounting with road force balancing.

My guy is in the western suburbs of Chicago and has done about 10 sets of wheels for me over the years.

That is super deal. I am in the Seattle metro area. Most Indy wheel refinishing shops here gave quotes in 800 -900 range. Dealer said 450/wheel and they usually contract out to third parties when they have to do the wheel refinishing.

$450 a wheel is silly. I buy clean used wheels for less than that. My last RS Spyder wheel was less...

...I mean...I understand that for a good refinishing job, $450 might be a reasonable price to pay for the craftsmanship...but before I'd pay that I'd try to find a clean used wheel...

I’ve paid about the same in the Dallas area for powder coating. The dealer pays that too and then pockets the difference so just eliminate them from the equation and save some $$$. The place I had mine done does a ton of local dealers and showed me how many wheels they sent him every week.

Appearance versus durability. Depends on your priorities.

Not just that though. There are a slew of reasons why paint is superior.

Powdercoating's heating process can change the metallurgy of the wheel and weaken it
Powdercoating can hide developing cracks in the wheel.
Powderocating is thick and can cover the stamped in wheel specifications
Done incorrectly, powdercoaters can coat lug bolt seats, beads and the wheel's back pad.
Porsche does not powder coat any of its wheels
BBS forbids powder coating on their wheels
Powdercoating can scratch easier than paint.

Larger wheels, like your 21" rims, usually cost more to refinish because they have a bigger surface area and need more material. The cost also depends on the type of finish. Painting is generally cheaper than powder coating. Powder coating is more durable and gives a thicker coating but is more involved and requires more equipment, making it more expensive. The extra $120 for mounting and dismounting the tires is typical. This covers the labor to carefully remove the tires, preventing damage, and then remount and balance them after refinishing. You should get quotes from a few other reputable wheel refinishing services in your area to compare prices.

This is who I used - it was a good while ago, but they did straightening and powder coating for my BMW 7 series and it turned out great. Don’t know about anodizing.
