2016 Cayenne 3.6L, High Oil Temp
Hi all,
I recently bought a 2016 cayenne and I’m absolutely loving it. Drives smooth, runs great, and so happy to be part of the Porsche family now. Only thing is that when I’m driving on the highway at 70-80 MPH, my oil temp will rise and it freaks me out a bit. I’ve seen it get up to about 249°F (see attached pic). When I slow down the temperature goes back down too but slowly and back to about 235°F. When I’m idling after it’s warmed up it’ll always sit at about 220°F which I think is very normal.
My last oil change was with Motul 0W-30 and I live in California. My fear is that when the weather starts warming up even more I could possibly run into more issues. Is 0W-30 fine? Should I opt into a higher viscosity oil like 5/10W-30? Has anyone experienced the same thing and can shed light? A bit nervous to do a longer drive because of the oil temp, I’d definitely appreciate some guidance.
Thank you in advance!

I see 194F Water temps (Steady) and 190-220F oil temps running around the same speeds and temps. (2016 GTS)
I think you are running a bit on the warm side. Not sure if the 3.6L has the automatic air-ducts up front, yours may be stuck closed hence the higher temps.

do you know how I can check on this? I tried looking it up but no luck. Given the temp hit almost 250°F it’s a bit nerve wracking going on drives haha

Look through the front grill, are there shutters? If so, the next time you go for a drive and see those high temps, pull over and see if those shudders are still closed.

There are a handful of threads in regards to the shutters/air ducts, some people jam them open when the motor fails (I think someone used a sock LOL).

Please note. The shutters only open when the car gets up to temperature. As soon as you shut the car down the flaps will close. Get the car up to operating temperature, pull over and leave the car running. Look through the grill to see if they are open. Or just check it it a code reader.

I managed to get my hand in there and forced it up and went back on the highway and it never exceeded 208F and idle is at 188F. Works SO well.
Can I leave the flaps open? Is there any risk or a specific reason that they’d have to close? The car is running extraordinarily well because they’re fixed open now. Do they have to close when the car is cold to heat it up/get it to optimal temp faster?
again, THANK YOU!!! This is so awesome I’ve been giddy about this all day hahah

I just got back home from taking the car out for a drive and WOW! I got oil temp to 240F so I pulled over and flaps were closed.

Glad that was the issue!
