Default Tire size for Cayenne Turbo

Hello forum members,

I have a 2014 Cayenne Turbo that was originally spec'ed with 19 inch wheels. The recommended tire size is 265/50-R19. While in general I do conciser purchasing a set of used 21 inch rims, thus far it did not happen. So, in the meantime I am considering purchasing a new set of all-season tires. My question is what other tire sizes would fit my car on a 19 inch rim? The recommended ones seem too narrow and I wonder if it is feasible to put wider ones. Or would you suggest to just stick to the recommended size?

Thanks!

I have the 21 inch wheels on my turbo. I really like them but tires cost is deadly. As I’m sure you are aware, these trucks eat rear tires.

@140.6er Very true for any size, I believe. I had an average of 32k miles on the 20' and currently about 22k on 19'. Files a claim with Michelin for abnormal wear, let's see if I get a free replacement set

Good luck with the claim. For it to push though, you're going to need records of timely tire rotation, alignment job and sometimes they are going to question tire pressures and how often you checked it. It's not a slam dunk thingy.

My Michelin tires get about the same as yours

@RAudi Driver That is interesting. It does not seem there is a formal interval for rotation (other than oil change, for example), alignment (which is done at the time of mounting), and tire pressure. I mean it all makes sense, yet how does one check it? Especially with aspects that are often driver related (say tire pressure can be adjusted manually). I will keep you all posted anyway.

It's a prorated warranty that dies at 2/32nd or 25% tread depth. Use the number that gives you the advantage.

I have Michelin Pilot Sport AS4's. It''s a 10/32nd and 6 years or 45,000 miles to get to 2.5/32nd warranty for me.

You have to get to that point before Michelin will even look at your tires for warranty purposes. I always change mine out before that but for those who don't, it will be a prorated amount applied to a new tire, which then will not carry the same warranty. In addition it has to be constant from shoulder to shoulder. It sucks because all the hoops you have to go through to get back pennies on the dollar, only to get tires with no warranty.

For me, it's a 15k mile per year car so that knocks the 6 year factor out, hence I have a three year warranty that I won't be able to get these tires to the bars, unless I'm driving like a bat out of hell 24/7, which I don't do. Actually my wife now drives that car so those tires are gonna last like 20 years. LOL

@RAudi Driver Thanks for sharing your insights. I just took the Cayenne for regular service and they measured front and rear as 3.69 and 3.15 (mm I would assume) stating that replacement is needed. I believe original thread is around 8-9mm so that would approach the 25-30% approximately. They sent me to an authorized tire place and they now scheduled me for inspection on Monday to check alignment along with thread depth.

I made a mistake on the 25% of treadwear. That only applies to a new tire that has a defect.

For tires that are worn it's number is 2/32nd's or 1.6mm. You've got a ways to go before Michelin will look at your tires. Of course the dealer will want to give you new tires, that's what they do. That's actually what I do also as I've had mishaps with worn tires when I was a young lad.

Quick update: I got the tire inspection done by an authorized tire place, submitted the paperwork (Carfax record signed by dealership) indicating original installation date and mileage, and got a 54% discount offer on replacing the warrantied tires. I think this is a great deal and just purchased a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport all-season tires. Thanks for feedback along the way!

My CTT came with 21" wheels, and I bought a set of 19" wheels for winter tires. I've discovered that the car is more comfortable on the 19" wheels. It's quieter, the road bumps are better absorbed, and it can still put down all 520 horses without tire sqeal on my favorite cloverleafs. Take that as one anecdote towards maybe saving some money by not buying expensive wheels that need more expensive tires.

@Tappet I surely hear you on the ride quality of the 19". My CTT's window sticker is $149k and I was very surprised to see 19" wheels at first. I later found out they spec'ed it this way particularly for the ride quality issue. Personally, I do prefer larger rims on the Cayenne, and yet where I live in Illinois 19" is the best driving-wise.

I will argue a 21" Turbo wheel is better
- Its forged and stronger than the regular wheels
- Wider, more stable
- Get a flat and your vehicle won't tip to the side, less tires
- You can upsize the tire with no rubbing to 295 40 21

19" only if you go off roading, for city its pointless.

Here she is with the new tires on! I decided to go with manufacturer recommended size 265/50R19 and chose Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season. TireRack has a great deal of $286, which is $40-60 below the average price of other options in the same size. Take into account the 54% discount offered by Michelin as part of warranty and it sure is a fantastic deal!
