Default Key FOB question

Need another Key fob for our 2014 Cayenne- I bought one off amazon but it needs to be programmed. Is there anyway to do this without dealer?

I don't think so. Went through this on my GTS and the dealer charged me $175 for the programming and it was done while I waited. You can get a cheaper price sometimes if you have a good relationship with your advisor.

I dont think VW can. Even though the 2 SUVs are very similar, I think the computers are completely different - VAG-COM vs PIWIS

Hi jeffro22,

I needed a new key fob and purchased one from a Porsche dealer last year.

To answer your question, I did some research on getting one of the third-party fobs programmed and was told by several key programmers that it was not possible.

When I purchased from the Porsche dealer, I was required to provide proof of ownership and the VIN. The order was placed and it arrived from Germany about three months later. It took about an hour for the dealership to program the fob to my Cayenne. Apparently sourcing the chips is causing the delay. The dealer also told me that while it could take up to three months, there was no definitive time frame for delivery: might arrive sooner or later. In my situation, it wasn't too much of an issue. I had a fob that would start the car, but not remotely lock/unlock it.

I agree with AnAlbumCover, VW probably will not be able to do it.

Good luck!

OP: the key fob you purchased from Amazon does it have the bar code tag attached ? If no bar code I don't think even a dealer can program it .

I bought an aftermarket fob for my 958 off of eBay to replace my beat-up fob and when I tried to program it with my Launch X431 it asked for a “Dealer PIN Code” to perform the programming, and the Launch presented a field into which to type the code, but of course I don’t have a dealer PIN code.

Ran into similar issue when programming a fob for my Genesis but it asked for the vehicle’s “key PIN” which, I later found out, is assigned to the vehicle’s VIN at the factory and is included in the new purchase paperwork. As I purchased used, I didn’t have that PIN but the dealership service department was able to look it up and provided it to me after I showed proof of ownership so I as able to program a new Genesis fob. May be similar at Porsche service department but haven’t pursued it yet.

The dealer pin is probably a method to keep thieves from programing a key and stealing a car.

Ok so I had just one key when I got the car...the key kinda started acting up and I contacted a local key maker who has been around a long time. He had a blank key with the electronics and said he should be able to program a new key. Quoted about $150 for the job (In Indian Money)
He was using an Autel 508 but after 2 hours he gave up. He said it is possible but maybe he needs a different key coder.
They took out the module from the car and have to solder some wires to it....but it didnt work and coding would stop at "Chip unlock failed" and it would throw up an option of overwriting even the one key I had. So we didnt push it...he is trying to arrange another key reader for the job.
Will keep you posted because a new key from the stealership in India is around $3k

Not sure what you're showing above, but $3k USD (?) is crazy, like 10x price. Reprogramming the keys to the vehicle should not take long

So to program the key they had to take out the module from the car...read of it and then transfer data to the new key.
The picture is of the module which stores info in our cars

Are you saying you got a replacement key from a dealer for $175 or just had a blank key programmed for that amount? If the latter, where did you get your key? TIA.

That's referring to the labor charge to teach the new and old keys to the car.
The key itself is around $4-500.
