Default 958.1 Base without PDCC Steering fluid change

Hello, I’m looking to replace the power steering fluid on my 958.1 (2014) base without PDCC. The vehicle has 81k miles. Is it necessary to replace both the fluid and the power steering reservoir? Thanks!

The reservoir is in fact a serviceable item (meaning it needs replacement every X years) as it has a filter that is non removable. Caught me by surprise when I heard about it...

There is a DIY article on this site that has all the instructions you will ever need.

You'll just get opinions, for whatever those are worth, because according to Porsche's service list, it's not necessary to do either.

Thanks for the replies! On the service intervals checklist, I see that at 90,000 km every 6 years, Porsche recommends replacing the PDCC reservoir, but they don’t mention the power steering reservoir.

That’s why I was curious, if its absolutely necessary to replace reservoir on non pdcc vehicles.

I for one have never heard of having the power steering reservoir replaced as part of regular maintenance item, so take the free advice for what it's worth (free...). I got "lucky" that the dealership changed mine when they replaced the power steering pump (which goes back in tomorrow as it's leaking..). Here is an excerpt from the service manual for 958 Cayennes. Interpret it at your will:

I did a power steering flush using this method, it made little mess, but nothing that couldn't be cleaned up from the top!I didn't swap the reservoir, but I did inspect and all looked good.

Thank you! Do you know why the pump was damaged, perhaps due to the reservoir? Does your vehicle have PDCC? Is there a place where I can download or buy this manual? I’m doing all the services myself, so that would be helpful.

Thank you! How did you inspect the reservoir? It’s my first time doing all the services, so I’m not sure how to determine if it needs to be replaced.

Years of experience of working on engines and mechanical devices (I eyeballed it, and it passed my test!). Nothing scientific, but I have been in and out of engines and under cars for more the 30 years.

Understood Any advice for someone new to this? I’m a little hesitant to replace it if it’s not urgently needed because I’m handling all the services myself and looking to save money where I can.

The filter is in the bottom of the reservoir, so it's tough to see, so I just went on overall condition of the reservoir. My Cayenne has 122,000 miles on it, overall it appears to have been maintained, and the reservoir was inline with the other parts.

I don't think the reservoirs are all that expensive but fresh new fluid is going to have the biggest impact. So if you're going to do anything, do the fluid and skip the reservoir.

From what I see the reservoir seems to be in good condition, looks almost brand new, just bought this vehicle, it has 80,000 miles on it. It has a solid maintenance history, but there don’t appear to be any records related to the reservoir service.

I see, I’m just curious why Porsche recommends changing the PDCC reservoir but doesn’t mention that the power steering reservoir also needs to be serviced.

I would guess that the hydraulic fluid for PDCC lives a harder life than the power steering hydraulic fluid? Just like a turbo charged engine will be harder on oil vs a naturally aspirated car.
