Default Leak from Bottom of Bell Housing-How Bad?

As I’m in the middle of a head gasket job on my 1998 Range Rover P38, I look over and see a puddle of fluid under the 2013 Cayenne Turbo. WTF? So I take off the under shield and find fluid dripping from in between the two little holes at the bottom of where the bell housing joins the transmission. It is red fluid so I assume transmission fluid. Maybe the rear seal?? How much do you guys think this would cost at Porsche dealer or is it a DIY?

Bell Housing leak.

That's coolant.

OK. It felt a bit oily but i agree on coolant. Once the truck cooled it stopped dripping. Is this a rear seal problem.

Ha, that's for sure. You got a leak in the valley. I'm now an expert on the matter. Hehe, thanks Garrett.

Ok. I’m pulling manifold and hoping that’s it. Thank you for the vid. Was it a difficult fix? Oh and as clarification, the leak looks like it is coming out of the hole there in the center between the housings

Same exit as yours, between the engine and bell housing. Place a pan there so when you start cleaning that mess in the valley, it all falls into the pan.

If you have that manifold off, you should do a carbon clean.

Also, if you want to clean up the valley this tool works wonders for getting that engine sparkling clean.

Haven’t had time to get deep into it due to finishing up in the Rover head gasket job. I’m hoping it’s not the dreaded crossover pipe at the back of the engine.

If it was that crossover pipe the leak would probably be way worse. As Garrett said to me for my leak, the vent tube is usually the first thing to go. You should get a vent tube no matter what as if you have access to it, change it. $65 well spent.

If you are doing a head gasket on a range rover you will have no problem with the vent tube. The only "special" tool you will need is a 17mm crows foot for torquing down the fuel rail.

That leak usually trashes the starter motor also. It won’t die right away but it will die. I would definitely replace it also.

Thanks for responses. Appreciate all the knowledge.

Im relieved to hear you think it’s not the cross over pipe, R.

Doug, you helped me last summer when I did the Water pump, TStat, Pulleys etc. I should have gone a bit deeper and did all coolant hoses… but alas here we are now lol.

I saw you tried to pm me. I cleaned up my inbox. Ya bummer you have to go thru this all again. Fingers crossed its not the crossover. Come to think of it, I can't remember a single post about a crossover failing.

Thanks Doug. This morning I finally finished the head gaskets on the Range Rover. That will get out of the garage and the 958 Turbo will replace it. Plan on digging in this weekend. Refresh my recollection, which pipe did you reglue?

Do you guys think this hose is the culprit?

Leaky hose? Anybody have the part number?
