Default How To: Cut a hole in the muffler and make the V8 sound awesome (video in thread)

A number of people have been wondering if you can cut the blanking ports of the stock 958 S muffler out and make the Cayenne sound better. As I plan to cut half my exhaust off eventually, I thought I'd give it a try.

The good news is that you can, it's really easy, and it makes the Cayenne sound like it should have from the factory (and quite similar to the GTS.)

The bad news is it can make your lungs feel itchy if you're not careful.

How to:
1) Get a hole saw attachment for your drill
2) Lay down near the back of the cayenne and locate the blanking plate
3) Drill hole
4) Get some sort of tool, I used a bent coat hanger and fish out all the fiberglass exhaust wadding
4.1) Wonder if the exhaust is secretly magic at all the wadding it contains.
5) Repeat on the other side
6) Enjoy

I would thoroughly recommend wearing an N95 mask, long sleeves and gloves when you're doing this. I'm not sure what exhaust soaked fiberglass will do to the lungs, but I didn't want to find out.

More of the wadding out. This was about 70% of it.

Cold start. It sounds raspy when cold but once warmed up the rasp sadly goes (I like it.) You do get the rasp if you use more than 1/3rd throttle in a certain rev range but again it goes away when hot. This video makes it sound louder than it is most of the time.

In car with window down. Quite hard to tell when cruising. I also realize my car makes odd noises which the phone picked up a lot.

On a motorway cruise at steady speed you're hard pressed to know it's been done. With all the windows up it's quite subtle even when accelerating.

I've now driven for 5 months / around 1000 miles with no issues. I'll try and get a driveby if anyone is interested.

Really, it's what the V8 SHOULD have sounded like from factory. Not intrusive, not loud, but you can now tell you're driving a V8 which I love, without ruining the internal comfort. But, I want it louder so the exhaust will be cut off before the muffler soon

Interesting. I’m planning to get rid of the secondary cats first, but I’ll have to try that after, as I plan on replacing the muffler anyways. Sounds good. I want more rasp out of mine.

I love the cold start growl but I find it too quiet otherwise. Why buy a NA V8 if you can’t hear it? I’ll be doing this soon.

I have a remote operated valve I can open and close. Sounds insane when open in Sport mode!

The PO had it done. Not sure exactly who did the work. It's basically a valve like this before the muffler. When closed, it sounds stock. Open, it sounds like some crazy exotic LOL

He probably has the factory PSE with the switch on the console.

The valve is definitely custom. Comes with a remote that allows you to open/close. I do also have the sport exhaust OEM button.

Lots of spots do that locally in Toronto. Some cars sound really bad , the v8’s sound pretty Damn good.

It’s super loud, but I debated trying it out.

it’s not factory. It’s exactly as the link you sent.

A flap opens/closes via remote

Yea, I can see it sounding crappy on some cars. It does sound glorious on the NA V8 of the GTS but I wouldn't want it open all the time either; it's great for those spirited backroad drives but I leave it closed for most normal driving situations. I basically treat it as Sport Plus mode LOL

I'll see if I can get out and get a vid this weekend. It probably sounds somewhat similar to this but still better IMO:

I’ve heard that one before, that was also an option.

Considering these guys are asking $1150-1300 Canadian dollars for cut outs , you may as well go with the secondary cat delete.

Cutting a hole will be the first thing I try shortly
