2013 Cayenne owner, I want to paint my silver wheels to gloss black or gloss graphite gray metallic. I live in Ohio so the roads get salted in the winters. Any DIY tips on how best to paint or if the paints holds up driving this everyday and in the winters on salted roads or does lots of chipping occur ?
When painting anything, always adhere to the 7 Ps of Painting;
Proper prior prep work prevents ****-poor paint job.
If you really want it to last, take the time to properly clean the wheels first. Then it’s not a bad idea to scuff the surface with red scotch-brite to give some adhesion. Then several light to medium coats of wheel paint until
coverage is achieve, adhering to dry and tack times on the can.
Personally, as a professional custom painter, I don’t enjoy going through the hassle of that on wheels and I’ve only painted a few sets of wheels that way because it just takes too much time. I almost always go with Plasti-Dip or Superwrap these days because;
A. It requires less prep. Just clean the wheel, mask the tire and start spraying.
B. It’s removable so if I want to change up wheel color or decide I don’t like the look, I can peel it off and the OEM finish remains.
C. It’s durable enough. Not as durable as paint obviously but I’ve had Plasti-Dip/Superwrap hold up for multiple Midwest winters without peeling or lifting.
D. Superwrap’s finish looks almost as good as powercoat. Pretty crazy how advanced the peelable paint tech has gotten.
I have some champagne and bronze Superwrap sitting here to do my wheels when I get a free afternoon.
Duplicolour Wheel Coating is the bomb.....and i say that from the experience of painting several sets over the years.
My Range Rover Sport was the last "victim" and they look brand new however as suggested its all in the prep.
18562073]@Visualistics does plasti-dip hold up to tire mounting?
If the shop is gentle it can be okay but usually I have to touch up the edges after I get tires mounted. I prefer to Plasti-Dip them after I new tires.
I do want to note that the finish quality is much higher on Superwrap so if you were going to do one or the other that would be my go-to for removable coatings. I have no affiliation with either, I just think Plasti-Dip can look cheap sometimes.
I also have used Duplicolor’s wheel paint and if you want something permanent that would be my recommendation. I painted my last set of winter wheels on my Golf R with it and it held up great to some serious salt and abuse.

Have you considered powder coating? I was quoted about $500 to do my wheels. That included un mounting and remounting tires and re-balancing. To me for that price and not having to go through any prep it is worth it.

Agree...powder coating after a soda blast is unbeatable and at the price you quote is even more unbeatable.
