I believe that allows you to remove the key if you lose battery power

That's a factory cut. They are all like that.

there's a little cover that snaps on it, had to take it off when I couldn't remove the key, battery tested just fine, but after replacing it, it works just fine...

Oh.... I lost my cover when I pulled it off. Totally forgot about that. It flew somewhere in the car.

I was wondering about the poor workmanship of that plastic
