4.2 TDI, as the title says starts and dies almost immediately. Battery is new so 100% ok there, I can't hear the fuel pump priming when opening the door so I'm thinking fuel pump maybe.
Had a basic code reader on and getting "no codes"

My high pressure went bad and your symptoms are the same as mine were. However, it's in the manual to always test the low pressure first.
You can do this by removing the rear seat to get the the filter and low pressure pump.
If you want to guess at this, then ask yourself a few questions:
1. Do you run the tank down to empty a lot?
2. Do you use anything less than premium quality diesel?
You can clog up that filter low pressure pump system pretty easy if you answer yes to these questions. If not then it just may be your high pressure fuel pump. If it were me and I didn't know, I'd change out both and the filter. Diesel is a dirty fuel to begin with.
Also get yourself an all data account if you don't already have one if you plan to undertake this task on your own.
