Question Possible to rebuild cardan shaft?

Hey all,

2012 M/T V6 with about 188kmi.

During a recent tire install, the technician noticed that the front and back of my rear cardan shaft (transfer case to diff) appeared to be leaking/failing. Will attach photos. You can see the line of grease being thrown. Rather than replacing the entire unit (~$1500), is there any possibility of having these boots replaced? I assume there is a bearing in there that would need to be repacked too. I haven't been able to find much online about the 958 style cardan shafts (a lot on the 955-957).

Any thoughts or experiences?

I don't have an answer but I would suggest also posting this in the VW Touareg forums (vortex, etc). They may also be able to help as I think the parts are similar?

Mayle have a kit for the 955/957 model - not sure it can be used on the 958 model. Might want to check their site

I would just replace it with a solid aluminum drive shaft. Cost about 1k and you'll never have a problem again.

I wonder if this is common, because my mechanic noticed the same on mine however attributed it to excess grease being spun out.

Interesting. I don't have any photos of this area that I can go back and check to see if this is a new condition or not.

If this is a "failure" in progress, any idea what the symptoms would be if these spots were to become warn? I assume shaft ends that port into the transfer case in the front and diff in the back are able to deflect a little by way of greased bearings.. maybe some odd vibrations at speed? Not sure what to do.

I had my 2011 CS at the dealer today and asked for a diagnosis on a shudder at 40mph when accelerating. I expected it to be the transfer case, but the tech said the rear drive shaft was coming apart. Noted that with the window down could hear some clunking. Quoted $3300..How hard a job is this to DIY?

thanks

Bj
