I fixed it by replacing the motor as described in my post above. Seems like a bit of over engineering, but I'm guessing they do it to decrease the coefficient of drag a bit and buy you 0.2 extra mpg 😅

Pretty sure the motor will still try to engage but give up each time when it realizes it's stuck. Not sure if u can just unplug it. That might throw a warning on the dash.
