I am in the market for a 958 Cayenne. I recall about 5 years ago using a free government site to check the vin of a Vette I was buying. It gave sufficient feedback on damage history to make a decision on a vehicle I was looking at.
I don't know what that site was...does anyone have that info?
Thanks,
Jim

If you're looking to check the history of a specific Porsche, you may be able to get a dealer to provide you with the service history. When I bought my CS, the service manager at the selling dealer sent me a fairly extensive PDF.
For a private party sale, the usual site is carfax.com...but it's not free and it doesn't catch everything.
If you are buying a used German vehicle, a pre purchase inspection by a knowledgeable mechanic is mandatory. This should take 3-4 hours, or more, and involve a thorough inspection and code dump.
Well worth the investment, as the inspection can turn up lots of things that can help with price negotiation. But, again, not perfect, not guaranteed to catch everything.
