Default Towing mode?

I've looked through the forums, and maybe I'm just not looking hard enough. I have a 2011 Cayenne sport, and I've been towing my small utility trailer in drive with no issues, but is there anything I need to do in order to tow something larger? Thanks.

Plug it in and go! The tow module senses when the trailer is attached and reacts accordingly

Run your VIN through here- https://vinanalytics.com/ That will tell if your car had a factory installed hitch. If it's not on there someone could have had the dealer install it or it could be aftermarket. You could take some pictures and post them particularly like a 45 degree shot at the receiver.

I wondered the same thing, what I discovered is it knows you are towing. It disables the lane change assist for one thing. Im not sure about trans modulation or anything else. but it does know its there.

I had one retrofitted, original part, manually removable with 13-pin plug. I've just been using it for a bike rack. I thought for a large load, it would have brakes in the trailer, perhaps these are just driven from the brake light signal?

If you are going to tow a larger trailer, you will need to add a brake controller. You should be prewired for it (under the dash). There's a couple of other recent towing threads documenting this.

Right, I thought that might be the case. I don't need it, but I'm surprised the garage didn't ask me!

If you're renting a 6x12 Uhaul trailer at 2K lbs, it will have surge brakes. If you're pulling a larger travel trailer at 4K or over, it will have electric brakes and need a controller...

Curt makes a bluetooth brake controller that works very well. We have towed an Airstream with our 2013 CD for over two years without any issues. Plus you can control the brake controller with the Curt app.
It's money well spent if you require a brake controller and do not want to pull or cut wires under the dash.

We similarly used the
Tekonsha Prodigy Tekonsha Prodigy
on our Airstream and another camper before that. Its easy and works great with multiple tow vehicles, but just one trailer. The box attaches to the trailer, but the handheld controller just plugs into the cigarette lighter on any vehicle. This was nice because we've used our Cayenne Turbo, my half ton GMC and a Diesel Silverado on different trips without having to buy a separate controller for each vehicle.
