Default Startup / Idle Whine

Hi all,

Brand new to the forums

958 Cayenne S 4.8 has a faint whine which can be heard at all times @ idle. The whine is also somewhat louder at initial startup and dies down (but I assume this is a result of the RPM's dropping).

It sounds identical to this video, which suggests it's the PS pump. I've "burped" the system using the method in the video with no success. Any ideas before I reach for the wallet and get the PS pump replaced?

Cheers.
Marco

As you research this, you’ll find (as you already did) that some claim the PS pump/system, and sometimes it is that. Others will say check the PDCC pump/system (if so equipped), and sometimes it is that too. Sometimes a serpentine belt and/or pulley issue.

But the bottom line is, some 955-958 series Cayennes just have the slight ‘whine’ at idle despite everything being in check. Not all of them, but many do. Both my 957 and 958 CTTs did it, and no issues with any components. I’ve test driven others that have had exhibited the whine too. Not sure why, but I just chalked it up to the nature of these beasts.

It is kind of annoying when you’re creeping along in a drive-thru or similar situation and your prized Porsche SUV sounds like an old, ailing Dodge Caravan.

Just imagine your car has a super charger!

Mine makes the same noise, I've tried everything and I'm 100% sure its related to power steering/pump but it works fine soooooo, not replacing it. Might replace it when I do belts/tensioners but no reason to chase a harmless noise.

That gave me a good laugh - Ailing Dodge Caravan is the perfect description.

I will look into the PDCC. Thanks for the tip!

Harmless indeed, but it sounds terrible!! I find it embarrassing.

Another use determined the noise was the PDCC lines vibrating against the frame. You can try to see if any PS lines are resting against the body and add felt/foam/rubber.

I agree, Porsche noises at idle are loud. My 17 GTS is much noisier (not in a good way) than my wife’s Audi Q5
