Question PCM firmware differences between v2.x, v3.x, & v4.x ???

I have searched unsuccessfully (& maybe the sticky can be updated with this question/answers)
but what are the firmware “differences” in our PCM’s?

I know the latest versions.... (as of today)
The latest is v4.76 if you are on v4.xx.

The latest is v3.43 if you are on v3.xx.
The latest is v2.47 if you are on v2.xx.

& understand you cannot upgrade firmware on the PCM from v2.x to v3.x or to v4.x
but what are the differences in the firmwares? i.e. what is missing from v2.x that v3.x or v4.x has?

this is going to seem like a dumb question, but I have to ask....
I see “PCM 3.1” discussed a lot, is that “3.1” referencing the “firmware” or something else?

A very good question, and I'm not sure if you'll find a comprehensive answer here. The shorty story is that there are hardware differences between the various versions. From a UI perspective, things seem pretty similar as far as I can tell, and might be close to identical.

do all three firmware versions = PCM 3.1

to put it another way, does the “3.1” refer to the PCM or a firmware version?

To answer your question succinctly, the "3.1" refers to the PCM that was first introduced in the 2010 Panamera and was superseded by the carplay compatible capacitive PCM 4.0 in the 2017 MY Porsches.

It has a resistive WVGA display and all revisions look physically identical. Later models have features like album art with iPhones, HD Radio, and Aha! radio. These features cannot, to my knowledge, be retrofitted to earlier PCM 3.1 models.
