Default Double-checking tire size change

Hey, I mostly lurk on this site. My wife drives a 2014 958 S. I tried convincing her to run winter tires on a different set of wheels, but she is against that; women, go figure!

I'm looking for a decent set of all season tires and my search has led me to CONTI dws06 tires. The reviews are decent for these tires. My wife drives the heck out of this PiG and has 85k on it so far, so I'm hoping these tires will hold up and provide decent stability.

Her current tire size is 265/50R19. I found the dws06 tires in 275/45R19, but this is just slightly smaller and wider. I suspect there will be no issues, but I wanted to see if anyone is running this size tire on oem 19" wheels.

I'm a Jeep guy and know a good bit about wheel and tire combos that work and don't work, but I'm not as well versed in the PiG world.

SimpleTire has a decent price and I can have them delivered to my tire guy.

275/45 is the recommended size for 20" wheels. 275/45R19 will be (of course) an inch smaller in diameter.

Appreciate the feedback, but I don't know that I agree with your conclusion. It is my understanding that a 1" larger diameter wheel will have no impact on overall tire size; there will just be 'more' sidewall with the 19" sized tire vs. the same size tire on a 20" wheel.

My "conclusion"? It's just math, no subjectivity involved.

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revolutions Speedometer Odometer Difference
275/45-19 4.9" 14.4" 28.7" 90.3" 702/mi 60MPH 10000mi N/A
275/45-20 4.9" 14.9" 29.7" 93.4" 678/mi 58MPH 9664mi 3.5%

The 275/45 will have a smaller circumference (-2.38%) according to a tire size comparison tool. This means that when your speedometer reads 70 mph with the new tires, your vehicle will actually be traveling at 68.32 mph, which is 2.46% slower than the original tires.

Thanks for all the feedback. It fits with my research...

I can live with the speedo variance; I do wonder if you can tell the car's computer the new rolling/mounted diameter and have a more accurate speedometer reading; we do this with newer Jeeps all the time.

Thanks again.

That's unfortunate as I've been very happy with separate summer/winter wheels and tires. The ride quality with the winter setup is superb and tire noise not noticeably different to me between summer and winter tires. Summer wheels are better for "spirited" driving but ride not nearly as smooth (esp. with "Sport" mode engaged and suspension lowered).

If you have the storage space, and appropriate tools (e.g. jack and impact driver) it's an easy swap. However, having been married once, I get that a lot of times marriage is the art of the possible.

My summer wheel/tire setup is OEM Turbo II wheels, Michelin Latitude Sport3, 295/35-21.

Winter wheel/tire setup is OZ wheels, Blizzaks, 265/50-19

So can't answer your original question but remember I did something similar with first car I ever had (1984 Chevy Cavalier) where I went up 10mm on the width and down 5% on the aspect ratio without adverse result. Hopefully someone can chime in with answer to your specific query.

The difference in how my Cayenne drives on "all-season" tires vs. the Blizzak's is night and day - in a good way. It's too bad you can't make her see reason. The safety margin afforded by the right tire is substantial.

I don't know where you live but my 1 season old 21" Conti DWS06 did not do well when the temperature hit 32F with some ice. I slid twice on the highway without touching the throttle so obviously the rubbers stiffened under cold temperature and provided no traction on ice. The next day I swapped out the Contis and put on the 19" inch winter wheels with Dunlop winter tires.

Blizzaks were the first studless winter tires I've ever tried and I've been mightily impressed.

We don't get much snow where I live but can happen, and I do drives to northern areas and Colorado in the winter. First time it snowed where I live, I took the Cayenne (with the Blizzaks on) to a large empty parking lot that hadn't been plowed to "test" the tires. Straight line stopping was fantastic. When I turned the wheel hard over and eased into the throttle, eventually it'd lose grip but when I let go of the steering wheel and off the gas, it almost snapped back into traction.

I ran that size (275/45-19) on my previous Touareg w/o issues. As mentioned, they are smaller so speedo will be even more optimistic than normal. As it is with stock size, speedo is off by about 3-4 mph...when it shows 70 you are only going 66-67. That being the case, I may actual try a 275/50-19 tire next time. No way that I know of to re-calibrate speedo.

Thanks everyone for the replies regarding dedicated winter tires. My wife has always wanted black wheels and I used this as one of my arguments for dedicated winter tires. Install a set of Blizzak DM-V2 winter tires on the factory silver wheels. Then, in the spring, shop for a set of black wheels (20") and some decent performance tires to boot. She likes this idea a lot, and I'm feeling better about the winter driving capability now. She drives a lot and has always complained about winter performance, but resisted dedicated tires.

Appreciate the assist.

Blizzak DM-V2 tires mounted today.

This is a bit early, but she'll continue to drive her 'summer' car until early December. Now to save for the black 20" wheels and performance tires for next summer!
