absolutely agreed. without e30rapidic, I don't think I would have attempted this.

Don,
Could this go into our DIY section?

Thanks,

Rob

Rob - see my comment above - when it's ready - sure. But we need more than just the pictures and a word description of R&R. Torque settings at a minimum.. assembly directions would be wonderful. I'd like to make a DIY that shows the scope of the actual work - enough so that people who shouldn't be considering rebuilding one realize they shouldn't - and so that people who are competent to rebuild one are encouraged to do so - and given the information needed to do it successfully. I'm hoping to get involved a bit with the Quadcammer project since he is within a reasonable distance for me - I can come observe, document, perhaps help.. and put together a DIY.

Darn, I counted at least 6 clutch plates in e30’s pictures. Cool stuff. I am very interested in this rebuild.

+1 . I think there are enough of these failures that having a DIY writeup would be a HUGE benefit to all.

Gents,
this is now happening. I have received my parts from AWD.TECH and will be doing the rebuild on June 2. I will try to document as well as I can.

First thing to mention is how impressed I am with AWD Tech. I received my parts, with regular shipping, in 2 days. Ordered Monday night, delivery wednesday afternoon. Parts well packaged and look to be very well machined.

I'm gonna fill with ravenol when its done.

will update this thread and have to say thanks to E30rapdic for his guidance.

are you going to add friction modifier additive to the transfer case fluid? It's been reported by several members that the additive significantly improves the transfer case performance.

I added it to my unit recently and it made performance worse. I believe thats because my friction disks are just worn. I may add a little bit after the rebuild, but I haven't yet decided.

How much did you add? And what brand did you use?

As far as adding friction modifier - it depends on what your problem mode is. If you have harsh stutter on acceleration (2nd and 3rd gears typically) - the clutch plates are likely grabby and friction modifier might help. If you have a surge when shifting - it sounds as if your clutch plates are slipping excessively - and friction modifier will only make this worse. If you have no symptoms - IMHO - just change the oil periodically and hope no symptoms appear.

I totally agree with this approach.
