ignition coils should be a service item

I wouldn't drive it on 7.
If it's your coil pack, fix it yourself. i'll bet Autozone just might have one. I remember buying coil packs from them for the MKV VW GTi and altough it came in a duralast box, it was the exact same cold pack as VW used when the car rolled off the factory floor.
On another note PSM failure shouldn't show up with a bad coil pack iirc.

I could be wrong and have been before but I was just trying to share what happened to me.
It happened to me just like the author who started this thread. I asked the dealership mechanics on their thoughts but nobody really knows for sure... thinking the ignition coil errors just throws everything out of sync. PSM Failure, Auto stop/start failure, check engine light are pretty common according to them. They get codes like P2308 or P2317, P0303 and P0353 depending on the cylinder that is misfiring.
sounds like it’s happening to others. What year and how many miles was your cayenne before the coils went bad? Mine was around 70-72k

2011 Cayenne turbo with about 70k when one coil went bad. All that showed was a check engine light. Ran the code and it was cylinder 7 misfire. That was it. Changed the pack and all was good. Two days later changed the other 7. I have 7 extra coil packs that I'm willing to give out for free. One per customer. Please only inquire if you truly need one.

Just to follow-up on my issue. I had taken the Cayenne this morning to my independent. Cylinder 4 was misfiring and required a new coil/spark plug. He offered to just have one done, but I opted to have all 8 replaced as a precautionary measure. I'd rather not want to think about it for a while, and it was on my list of things to do as maintenance this year anyway.
I'd do it myself, but I'm on the road for work Monday - Thursday and will need it back up and running by next Friday for a trip out of town.

Glad you got it done. Coils are the same age and others will fail like mine did within the year. Mind if I ask what year is your car and how many miles you have? Seems to be happening around the 70K mile mark.

2013 with 62k miles. I bought it used back in 2018 with 51k miles and I knew I’d have to replace them sooner or later this year.

Did you retrieve the working 7 coils from the mechanic? Always good to have an extra one laying around in case this happens again or to hand them out to your fellow member.

Driving home, she runs so much better. Plus, replacing the plugs + coil packs seem to have resolved a pestering rattling coming from the engine bay. Probably wasn't related, but at least it's gone! Peace and quiet!

It was a little over $800 to get them done...which probably will be cheaper than what you pay at the dealership.
I don't mind paying to get it done...especially to get it done right. I'm flying Monday - Thursday and need the SUV over the weekends, especially if I'm driving out of town.

Forgive my ignorance. I know a diesel does not have plugs, but does it have coils? What does it cost to change the coils?
