I was told decisively by more than one Tech that there is no such thing as a "walk away" feature.

Not sure what the logic was in that decision though, fail to see the liability in auto-locking.

Liability in auto locking is indeed real. I've seen situations where a mother pulls into a gas station on a hot day to get some gas. There is an infant in the baby seat in the second row. Mother leaves the keys on the seat or in her purse, which is in the car, as she get out to pump some gas. However, after 1 minute, the doors automatically locks. Now the infant is trapped in the car along with the keys, and mother has no way of opening the doors. It's situations like these that make auto lock a liability.

However, there is an automatic re-lock. What happens is if you unlock the doors with the remote but fail to open any of the doors, then after a certain amount of time (about 40 seconds), the doors will re-lock themselves. The reasoning is that if you unlocked the doors with the remote (this means you have the keys in your possession) and you do not open the doors, then maybe you unintentionally hit the unlock button as you were leaving the vehicle. Therfore, it re-locks it for you. If you really did intend to unlock the car, then you can just re-unlock it again with the remote after it locks back up.

Hope this makes sense.

Let me tell you for the first week I had my TT, the "walk away" lock feature worked. We even tested it out under different scenarios at the dealer..then it stopped working, and all I get is deafening silence.

So I can tell you from actual experience there is a "walk away" feature, the tech is wrong..he like others may not know how to activate it.

The example of the "locking" the child in the car is not real, because the car won't lock automatically when the transmitter is in proximity, i.e. you have to have it with you, when you're walking away. And, if you have with you then you can unlock the car and "rescue" the baby.

So the riddle continues!

Who knows, I was told everywhere but US you can open and close convertible top on 996 with remote. It may be a US "disabled" item and yours slipped through?

Thanks EuroCarNut,

But your examples are not related to the E&D "walk away" function, which would entail turning off the engine and walking away from the car with the fob (only step excluded would be having to press an additional button).
