Considering a diesel - question: trans the same across all models?

To the Op -
You can install any tow hitch that is compatible with the appropriate model year Cayenne, but you will need to have the tow module activated by PIWIS II system - usually a Porsche dealer. The Porsche dealer aftermarket kit probably has nicer fit and finish, and is essentially the same as factory install, but as others have said, at a significantly higher price point - the Porsche kit is a very solid hitch. Non Porsche kits may need some electrical adaptation depending on wiring. Just make sure if you go non-Porsche you get it setup for the 7 pin blade style RV connector, otherwise you have just wasted a lot of time and money because you will have to do it again if you want electric brake control via controller. A really good trailer guy can properly install the hitch, but cannot activate and calibrate the towing module - only a Porsche shop with PIWIS II - hence why many folks just use the dealer.
As some others have said, if they misrepresented the CD you are considering as having a tow hitch, then you may have some leverage in getting them to install one - at a minimum at the cost of the factory install, not the full dealer aftermarket install price.

Just as an FYI, people seem to report that the 958.2 (2015+) diesel is a bit stronger than the 958.1 (13 & 14). The spec sheets don't back that up, but I've read that from multiple people that have owned both.

I'd drive the '14 before agreeing to anything, but it's good to know and something I'll pay attention to.

Yup. CD is the best DD vehicle around IMHO. Enough sportiness to be just as quick around town compared to my old BMW 550 and handles comparatively well. Everything it does seems effortless while being great on fuel consumption.
I picked one up '13 52K miles with $38K OTD this past summer and have not looked back. I was not concerned with model year due to the extended warranty. My CD came with a factory tow hitch but was missing the controller so the tailgate would not open via remote or driver window switch. Part is $300 from Suncoast or around $700 installed and programmed at the stealer.

If you really paid 38 out the door that sounds like a KILLER deal.
I did find a 2013 with 35k on it, optioned how I want for $45k 300 miles away. Being a 13 with a 2012 in-service date means it has a bit less time left on the warranty tho. Warranty is kind of important to me.

Ok one more question since I seem to have the attention of some of you
The diesel 6y/100k warranty... is that transferrable and applies to all CD's?
I might have access to buy direct at auction, hence my question.

My car's original warranty expired due to mileage but not time when I picked it up. It was at a JRL leasing company. PO got a Range Rover. All CDs have 100K warranty. If the car is a CPO before the debacle, warranty is extended to 125K miles.
Question you have to ask yourself is: is it worth $10K extra for a car to be under warranty 1 year and basically the same? The parts you can buy with $10K. $45K for a car that is 35K miles is not that off the mark in today's market if you can negotiate it to a OTD number.
I do recall issues with IL state diesel having too much biodiesel blend and it does not make these European diesels happy. We all run B10 blends in the rest of the country but some Midwest states have up to as much as 20% biodiesel blend and can potentially run into a lot of issues. It is all around the Mercedes forums..
If you can look past that then I would buy the CD before they try to fix something that don't need fixin'..

I got a quote from my dealer this week for $2000 to put on the Porsche hitch. Just a bolt on and PIWIS programming and no difference from a factory install or towing capacity compared to the aftermarket.

The only way to be sure is have a dealer check the VIN. The CPO status will show up on his computer if it has it.

I took it for a quick drive tonight (didn't realize they closed at 6 on Fridays and I strolled in at 6:02, totally oblivious).
It'd only been off the truck a few hours and hadn't been cleaned/detailed yet (it was pretty dirty inside). I'll likely go back tomorrow AM and see it in the daylight.
But there is *definitely* a difference in power FEEL between the 2014 and the 2016 I drove yesterday. 2016 feels much stronger mid-range.
However, in thinking about it - I'd be willing to make a pretty concrete bet that the only actual difference is in the pedal calibration (think "sport" pedal vs. normal). I think they likely just changed the pedal cal for 2015+ to make the truck feel spunkier.
