TPMS on my '08 CTT
The reason for the post is I am considering a set of used mounted winter tires without the sensors installed. Just curious how egregious the warnings might be, or if it can be turned off.
How do I know this? Last year I knew the snow was coming on a certain day (I remember it was a Monday) so I swapped from 21" summer wheels to 20" winters the day before but when I dropped it on the ground one was a little soft - no big deal I thought - I`ll simply pump it up
Except I couldn't cos the valve was so corroded (I`d just bought the car a few months earlier and never used the winters before so I didn't know) so I had to swap back to the 21" summers again which were pretty well shot
I took it to work the next day and made arrangements to get the 20" valves swapped out. It did indeed snow hard that day and later when I went to drop the wheels off it was the scariest drive of my life - the car was all over the place
When I got to the shop I explained that I had an appointment and what I needed - turned out i was talking to the owner and he told me that the person who promised me they could do it shouldn't have as they probably didn't have the parts and it would require quite a bit of time (it was quite late in the day by this stage)
We had quite the heated discussion and I told him point blank there was no way I was leaving with the 21" summer wheels on so we agreed to swap the valves for non TPMS and fit the wheels - I knew it would give the annoying alarm but I did it anyways as I probably wouldn't have made it home in one piece if I hadn't
It worked just fine right up until (and thats why I`m telling you all this) my wife took the car to our new house while I was out of town on business and drove it on a semi flat tire to the point it was destroyed
So I was left with 3 top of the line Nokian winter tires with ~70% tread on them. I couldn't get the exact same model as it was no longer being produced and at the very least with it being an AWD I needed to get a pair but in the end I decided it was better to replace all 4
So ultimately not having TPMS cost me over $1600, what really needled me was that changing over to Summers was literally one of the first things on my to do list when I got back cos winter was over but the tire was trashed by then
Suffice to say the TPMS are fitted to the new tires......
