I had a chiped turbine wheel (hot side) on a bmw 3.0 diesel and all it did pretty much was a lot of whining noise as the out of ballance wheel made contact with housing, there was a waaay more noticeable turbo lag and overall it felt sluggish. Had to replace cat as well.

As for the boost pressure, 0.8 is the max boost on a 957 TT and since it's the same engine, you should be okay. The new 3.0 tt v6 for S is a completely different engine and thus cannot be compared to your v8 tt.

This recall seems to address the turbine wheel, not the compressor.

I would guess the turbo shaft wore its way out of alignment, but I do wonder why it wasn't more obvious--vibration, etc.
