Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 review
#16
I have the conti DWS for summer. Softer sidewall than I would like, but I also fly fish a lot and drive the pig on muddy slick logging roads. Work for me. As for winter, pretty much not very good. This is what our town looks like much of the winter. let alone the road to my house. Pretty much every vehicle has ice radials.

I recently changed from MIch Latitudes to Conti DWS 06 , I have a 958.1 GTS
I have put a few hundred miles on the car and I can confirm the following,,
- Around town, the ride is harsher than the Mich Lat, tires are slightly noisier than the Michelins on rougher roads and as quiet as michelins on Black-top quiet roads.
- Driven aggressively, the tires have about the same traction as Michelin, although the side wall is softer when hard cornering, and edge/extreme traction is slightly less..
- Wet traction is very good
- On Highway speeds, tires have a nice plush ride, again noisier than Mich on rough roads and as quiet on black-top highways (hard to find these days)
Overall, although the Michelins have an advantage over Conti DWS 06, I dont want to replace tires once a year, and that was the main reason I moved away form Michelins.

I don't mind a harsher or nosier ride, I'm mostly concerned with wet and dry handling compared to latitude sports since I would like a tire that can handle corners equally well.

That photo you posted would be one of the worse snow storms of all time if it happened where I am in the midwest. I'm not looking to plow through 12+ inches of snow, I just need something to handle the occasional 3-4". Some years we get no accumulating snow at all.

I've been running mine (21's) for about 6 thousand miles, two cross country trips, plenty of back road adventures, and a few ski trips. Best all round tire for the car IMHO
I don't live where I need winter tires, and I don't race my P!G

I'm with Swift. I run these on every car that I can get correct fitment for. My wife's Phaeton I had to go with P Zeros and wasn't happy about it.
I have probably 150K miles total on this brand/style and have never been in an environment where these were not completely competent and confidence inspiring. (see avatar)
They offer reasonable dry performance and exemplary wet and snow performance, "Somewhere in Mexico" I had them up to 100 mph through soft pack with no issues.
I run them 39 fr/ 45 rr and 275/40/20 sizing so I can't comment on soft sidewalls.
I appreciate that "D W S" are molded into the tread and as the tire wears losing effectiveness in the more challenging conditions, that letter disappears from the tread.
DWS will become DW and eventually D.

It's been about a year on the DWS 06 here too. About 8500 miles and has been a good experience. Plenty good handling, softer ride which isn't bad with the steel springs. Quiet and handling in the dry and wet have been what has been reported. Haven't gone up to Tahoe yet, but I'm not expecting any issues with snow.
@F1: Running stock sizes, 275/45-19, currently set at 42 f/ 49 r so the TPMS alarms don't sound.

Sorry but these tires are awful. Maybe it's because I'm going from pilot sports to these but the pilot sports are so much better at handling. I would go as far as to say the dws06 are unsafe.
it's night and day difference. It's like comparing the handling of a 911 to a Camry. My cayenne feels like a whole different vehicle now, a vehicle with poor handling.

Reason I'm comparing them is because I went from Porsche OEM pilot sports to Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 because they were suppose to be the "best" all weather tires for 21" cayennes. So I'm warning people, don't do it. Get a winter car, or be prepared to swap tires every winter.

pilot sport work great in heavy rain but they might as well be coated in Vaseline in snow or ice. I drive my Cayennes year-round and also use it to tow my snowmobiles to wherever the snow is. I've logged 130K miles on DWSs chasing our college baseball player all over the East Coast and baseball is a spring/summer sport so I think I have built a pretty good knowledge base on the DWS.
DWSs have never caused anything remotely like a safety issue and they go through snow like the proverbial knife through butter. In rain they are fantastic too and handle respectably in the dry.
If its all about handling, the Cayenne is the wrong tool to pull out of the box.

DWS do not go through snow like a knife through butter. Snow tires do. I run DWS06 as my 3 season tires. They're great in the rain and respectable in the dry. I've driven them in late spring and early winter snow storms and while they get the job done, they're not all that great and certainly don't hold a candle to the snow tires I put on for winter use...
