Strange noise
Hi Everyone
I wonder if you can help me. I have a 2003 Cayenne S (4.5) and there is a very strange "whooing" noise coming from the front left hand (passenger) side. It is somewhere near the front wheel or in the engine bay near the front wheel and only starts if I exceed 25mph. It's not a grinding or rubbing noise, but a constant "whooo" which gets louder if I accelerate and dies down as I slow down. My husband said that the noise changes in pitch when he moves the steering wheel, but I can't say that I have noticed that and I drive it more than him. Any suggestions as to what it might be?

Definitely sounds like the power steering pump, esp. if your husband noticed a change in noise when turning the wheel.
EDIT: Sorry, did not notice the "when you exceed 25mph". In this case it could be a wheel bearing. The tend to do a "whooing" sound, not a grinding one. Does it change at all when putting weight on either side during cornering?

Hi Torre,
It does change but the noise is only on the one side. My husband suspected it may be a bearing and he will now check it on the weekend. If it's not that, in the word of Arnie "I'll be back!".
Thanks everyone - you have been really helpful as always.
Regards
