I'll give the adaptation another try.

As an interesting aside, Yesterday, I tried driving the car in manual mode. In this way, it was pretty much buttery smooth. Still a little clunky from 5 - 4.

I threw in the towel. The Transgo kit did not work for me. It helped on the 2-3 and 3-2 shift, but I continued to have a really bad 5-4 downshift - actually it was worse after the TransGo kit. It was particularly bad when you were coasting and then got back on the gas. The shift was violent and scary at times. So, I bit the bullet and got a RevMax rebuilt VB. Took just 3 hours start to finish to swap it in. I am SO HAPPY. All shifts are very smooth. Still a little clunky when shifting into D, but I think that will smooth out as it re-learns. On this morning's commute to work, I kept anticipating the horrible 5-4 downshift, but it never happened! I am a happy camper!

So here are my conclusions:

TransGo: Pros: Cheap! ~$100 + fluid and filter. Cons: May or may not solve your shifting issues. Takes a LONG time to do. ~2 days of down time. Easy to mess up. Very "fiddly"

RevMax VB Pros: It works! Cayenne is back to its wonderful self. Much faster to install. Took me 3hrs start to finish. Cons: Much more expensive than TransGo (but cheaper than other VB I've seen). $700 + fluid and filter.

Did you do a forced adaptation with Durametric or the multi step adapt method?

Not sure the difference? After I installed the TransGo kit, it was very rough. There is a method for getting the trans to "re-learn" or re-adapt. Several R-N-D-N-R... shifts and lots of manual shifts. ATHat helped, but I eventually had a shop reset the Trans adaptation using their PIWIS or whatever that's called. It helped for some of the upshifting (2-3 mostly), but the 5-4 shift was always problematic b4 and after. Never got better.

I have not had any adaptation done for the new VB. Doesn;t seem to need it.

Default Hard and flaring 2-3 and 4-5 shift

I know this is an older thread but have this issue.
2-3 and 4-5 hard and flaring shift under moderate throttle. Seems good under light throttle. Did filter and fluid change, pan looked great with no metal in pan an magnets looked good. This 04 has 208k miles and not sure when fluid had been changed or ever changed. After fluid change it seems better at times but still not right.
only have driven 50 miles or so . Thinking of pulling pan and pulling solenoids and cleaning before spending a bunch of money on a valve body.
any comments?
Thanks
