We can repair Cayenne blocks
#31
As an update, I dug up my engine number (84801658) and it falls into the earlier, non-structural honed block. My engine is still going strong at nearly 80k.
I will re-state my suspicion that the cylinder scoring that many S owners have had is due to the earlier process. Anyone have thoughts on this?
Jake, Carl, anyone?
Cheers,
TomF

Other factors are that the Turbo models have additional oil squirters below the piston which help to some degree as does the different piston/cylinder materials and more relaxed tolerances
With that in mind in theory the Turbo models are the most "score resistant" but there are well documented cases of CTTs suffering this failure too
I`d be curious to know if the revised parts do cure the issue as I have a new engine fitted by Porsche under the CPO programme (as a result of scoring) which I believe has the new revised parts.
When I see Cayenne scored cylinders it always reminds me of "cold seizures" that are common in 2 stroke engines. With this in mind I`d still be concerned about using the car in the arctic conditions that we frequently see in Canada, I`m probably gonna fit an oil pan heater (as it *should* be relatively easy to do) but would love to get a Webasto Coolant heater (it was a factory option) installed.
I`m confident this would eliminate the issue for good as the oil would be up to temperature (so will flow and lubricate as designed) and the cylinders and pistons will be at a temperature where they have the correct tolerances before the engine is started (so no "cold seizure")
Of course getting into a nicely warmed up car with all the windows defrosted is just the icing on the cake.........

The more I think about it the Parking Heater option should have been standard equipment for all Cayennes coming to Canada (or anywhere cold)
Some vehicles come equipped with these as standard (off the top of my head Mercedes commercials - at least the ones I owned in europe did, even some VW Touaregs I believe and I know there are others)

Ive always thought it would come back to a manufacturing process at the factory. I never bought in to "Sulpher in the gas" - those were mere obfuscations.
So yes - it might not be the answer, but its dams close to it.
