Best Year For Used Cayenne?
I have a friend who will be returning to the Denver area from working overseas for a while. He is interested in purchasing a used Cayenne S. I have experience with 2012 models, but nothing older.
Looking for some opinions on the best years for a used V8 Cayennes. Also, I am aware of the issues with the coolant pipes and cardin shafts in older vehicles, anything else to look out for?
Thanks,

2008-2010, the facelifted models, don't have the coolant pipe problems that the earlier Cayennes did.
2008 has PCM 2.1
2009+ has PCM 3.0, which has the touch screen and bluetooth.
They all have the cardan shaft issue, however the repairs are easy.

If off-roading is of interest, the 958's of 2011 and later lost the two speed transfer case as well as the optional adv off road package. Good news is that weight dropped 550 lbs.

My 2004 CS has aluminum coolant pipes, a new cardan shaft and new coils. It's awesome!

NO Cayenne ever came with aluminum coolant pipes stock.
Personally, bang for the buck goes to the 2004. There were simply 2X more 2004s than any other year. So there is a skewed idea that they have more issues than the later years, even though there were no changes. This just puts the 04s at a much more attractive price point. No reason to spend 2X as much for something like an 08 when its 85% the same vehicle.
If you look at the common issues, coils, control arms, driveshaft, etc. ALL of them have had 8-9 revisions to the part numbers. Which means that even the stuff that came stock on an 06 wasn't good enough yet.
Which means, at this point the odds of having the latest and greatest revision on those parts numbers is about equal across the years.
The stereo got a slight upgraded from CD nav to DVD nav in 2005, but there are now some much better options for a direct replacement. None of them were very good until 2009.
