Getting TPMS to work

Getting TPMS to work
Hi everybody,
So I bought an 04 Cayenne Turbo and it's time to replace the tires. When I bought it it had a TPMS system not active warning on the dash. I've never had a TPMS system before so I didn't really worry about it. Now, I'd like to get everything working the way it's supposed to. Where do I start? Can you tell from the outside if the current rims and tires have the sensors in them? Should I go to manual and try to activate the system? Since the sensors are battery powered, should I just replace them? Any suggestions on the best place to buy Porsche TPMS sensors? Thanks.

I believe that TPMS was an option in that year. The valve stems are fatter, more mechanical than normal, rubber stems.

Okay, second stupid question. If my car didn't have TPMS as an option would I continue to have a TPMS system off warning on my dash? How long do the batteries in the TPMS sensors usually last?

I've heard that one should expect 5 years on the TPMS sensor batteries.
Since i have not kept a vehicle longer than 3-4 years, I'm interested to hear what some have actually experienced.
