Keep at it jpru. The mod is worth it. I ended up using a new 24 tpi blade to hack away at those pesky tubes with a gloved hand rather than using any frame for the blade.
Once cleared, my 12 year old son and I shoved the 1 7/8" flex tubes in and we were done in 5 mins. I agree a 2 inch diameter tube would fit better though we have not heard any rattling and given how the tubes are situated, there is no way for the tubes to escape.

Did this mod the other day to my 04 CTT, dremel didn't work on the small tube inside muffler, so I used a hacksaw blade and easily removed that.

I must be using the wrong hacksaw blade...didn't do anything but bend my blade up. Need to find a stiffer one with more tpi I guess.
I got 2/3 through the driver side tube with a hole bit before drill gave out on me yesterday, so progress is made. Also borrowing a sawzall today.
So right now I am driving around with no exhaust tips lol. Actually the exhaust sounds deeper and louder with just the tips off!
I'll get the mod done this weekend come hell or high water.
Anyone have part numbers for the exhaust clamps that we loosen to remove the tailpipes? One of mine is cracked, and both of them are rusted at the hardware pretty heavily and I already know I will have to cut them off. Would like to order new clamps before I start the project.

FWIW, the Lenox brand hack saw blade I got at Ace worked just fine.
friend came over with dewalt sawzall and a diablo diamond blade in it, because he had just been cutting ductile iron pipe. literally less than 5 seconds each side. so for anyone considering this mod, a sawzall with the right blade makes it very, very quick....but careful it could have notched the muffler quick.
oh and the sound. man what a perfect mod. grunty when you want it, quiet when you don't.
so last two weeks have plastidipped rims, vynil wrapped exterior pillars, and did the muffler bypass. good times. if I was driving a 958 of course I wouldn't be doing all this, but lets face it a 955 S is a $10,000-$12,000 car at this point and you need to have some fun with it. but no one is touching my wife's A6!

I have just tried to do this mod on my 955 Turbo S , bought some 54mm pipe cut to 400mm however the diameter is far too small , the pipes just rattle about in the silencer . I have measured the inside diameter as 64mm so intend to get more pipe . Does the Turbo S have a larger diameter exhaust ? What diameter pipes are others using ? I read that 54mm was the size for Turbo models .
The size that everyone else has been using successfully was 1 7/8", this is of course flex pipe though, meaning this pipe may be adjusted slightly, and curve inside the muffler. From what it seems you are saying, you have just used a plain pipe? The internals on the Turbo S should be no different from the turbo as well
