Default Voltage varies car then dies

very informative
my daughters 04 with 170,000 miles
It's starting to play for the buc is starting to play up
AutoZone said battery was OK
All the usual things, stops radio stops warning lights Extra
should I just assume it's the alternator
Or pay to have it diagnosed
then replace it
Thank you in advance
Russ

HEy Russ,

Sounds like it could be the generator starting to go, with all the intermittent problems you are seeing, but obviously I can't diagnose anything from here or send you down the wrong path. Have you put a Votlage meter across the battery terminals whilst the car is running to see what the voltage reads?

I would check the voltage at different stages of your driving trips, i.e. when you start it, once the car is at operating temperature. and all throughout your day trip etc. As when i tested mine it would read ok within range, so I thought the generator was ok, however I caught it one time fluctuating, so I tested it again and it was down to 12.5V, another test showed 13.8V, 14.2V then back to 12.V, but like I have mentioned, once that Electrical Load Switch fault comes on, your pretty much screwed.

To get the generator tested in these cayennes (according to dealer), apparently you need to take most of the car apart, (i.e. similar to changing the generator out)
just to get to it to test it. that will set you back a couple hundred bucks $. Then even if it is a faulty regulator it is still the same process as changing it out, only to put it all back in and find it is not just the regulator.

Depending on you skill level and time, first suggestion would be save your money and buy the generator from the link I gave or pm me for it again, for the same money as it would cost you to have the generator diagnosed, and either replace it your self or have a indy give you a quote.

Yep. I assume its crimped at the factory for assembly convenience. Soldering gives a better connection. and unless your showing at Pebble Beach, no one will ever know.

Mine went out and is being fixed as I speak. Local indy guy I trust but he does charge 120 per hour. $2200 parts and labor...... Said alt was $750 Genuine Porsche... Had to order some misc gaskets and such. So at 120 per hour does that price seem right ? Would have to be atleast 10 hour job right ? Seems hard to believe.

dllhg, 10 hours Seems about right to me! Trust me, its a PIA. as for $ per hour well i can't comment on that, as I did the job myself. Your indy's price is half of what I got quoted from the stealership.

Well I called another local shop and they quoted me $1400 parts and labor. $700 for the alt and 6 hours for the labor. This really bothers me. I dont mind paying the guy 120 per hour or even giving him a couple hundred extra for the part but $800 ?? I think I need to at least talk to him. He is walking distance from my house and I like him but thats too much over IMO. another good indy always hooks me up and is like 1 mile away.

Just curious, is yours a turbo?

If you can get someone to replace your alternator on a cayenne turbo in 6 hours for $700 then do it man, def!
I too am very eager to know if it can be done in 6 hours, please let us know!
But yeah talk to your Indy, before he starts wrenching, communication is key!

Hey I just re read my posts and johnnrusso thread, he says between $2000-$2500 he was quoted.
I was quoted $2700 inc $1300 alternator $4000 Total from Porsche with 11-12 hrs. In SoCal.
But because I did it myself I only paid $373 for an upgraded OEM alternator. From Gaudin Porsche Parts.
So back in my earlier post is a list of extra parts and prices you need with part numbers.
Check it out for reference, if your trying to save $$ then buy the parts yourself and get them to do labor. $373 vs $700-$750,
6 hrs labor is better than 10. $700 vs $1200... I would def be talking to them both!

Yeah mine is a turbo. $1400 was for the turbo I made sure he got that part.

Tough position. I hate to say something for fear of making it sound like I am accusing him of overcharging. At the same time I am likely to go to other shop in the future if I am being charged $800 extra. Even if he just offered to give me the part at cost and knock $200 off I'd be a lot happier.

Yeah I understand I would prob assume he is using the service manual or tsb to get an estimate of the labor time, if he is a genuine guy and finished it in 6hrs and adjusted for you that would be something!, unlike Porsche who charge you full labor hours even if it did take 6hrs. That's not cool! Stealerships lol
You could also prob just tell him the other Indy said 6hrs and the guy on the forum (without a lift & all the right tools) took nearly 10hrs to see what he could do.

Well its over. Ended up being $2700 total. He did replace one of the belts that was all cracked and several sets of plastic pipes that had broken connections on them. He offered to take $200 off of the Alt but also said he would only be getting paid for like half his labor...... Had about 18 hours total into it. When he said that I wasn't going to leave feeling bad about things so I just gave him the extra $200. Wasnt worth hard feelings. That being said I will only use him for limited things in the future unfortunately. He was super thorough on my car and caught a lot of stuff which is good. What I didnt like was he ordered parts from the beginning without talking to me about any of them first. Like the Alternator. I called him the first morning he had it and he had already ordered one. I said I could get a OEM one for $400 less but since he already ordered just use his I guess. Saved me a day for $400. Not a great deal.

New battery and new Alt I feel pretty solid about car. He did also check coolant pipes and they appear to be case aluminum which is a relief. If they were plastic I would just sell the car.

Most expensive car repair I have had outside of broken engine or transmission. Wow........quite certain I would have saved at least $600 going to other shop and had no hard feeling about anything. Oh well.
