From the March 2003 issue of Automobile, p. 47:

"...the success of the BMW X5 and the soon-to-arrive (yet already sold out) Porsche Cayenne proves that there's a solid buyer base for this type of machine..."

In my mind, the fact that Porsche has "sold out" the first year of production to American dealers is a far cry from being "already sold out" to actual buyers.

Call me naive, but I still think this is some pretty cheesy marketing.

What retailer of any product wants the word on the street to be, "Oh, its nice, but it's sold out?"

Most dealers do have their TT cayennes spoken for, with back-ups.

But while the purists are waiting, dont be surprised when the non car folk step up and sell the thing out. Remember the Boxster launch? This thing will be a repeat of that, and with only 12,000 units, selling out, isnt really a probability, it's a certainty.

Peace
PS

Ive got the first TWO TT cayennes sold to Lexington btw.....

Where do you think the journalists are getting this information from?

Time will tell if you're right about the Cayenne being a big sustained sales hit. For your financial health, I sincerely hope it is. However, I have my doubts, because at those price levels, emotion and lust have a lot to do with auto purchases. The Cayenne may be a lot of things, but it's no looker.

Let's see...A beautiful girl who is a pretty good lover or an ugly girl named Cayenne who is phenomenal and can do acrobatics in bed? Tough call - especially if we're talking about a long term relationship. (my apologies to sensitive types for the crude, but I think appropriate, analogy)

I don't think price will be an issue at all. The market is full of $50k M-B ML500's, V8 X5's and a slew of others in the $40-60k bracket. I see you bought a Rangie, the Cayenne is cheaper and faster. There isn't much out there in SUV land that really catches my eye styling wise. The X5 is the only one I can think of that is sporty and unique enough.

Brent,

The "standard" Cayenne S has received some pretty so-so reviews regarding its ride quality, interior plastics, etc, etc. Most journalists suggest that the air suspension is a must.

So, we're not talking about $40-60K, but close to $90K for a Cayenne Turbo. That's a bunch of money for anything less than an exotic.

I bought the Rangie to replace my previous $90K MB S500 Sport as the family luxury car (that could also tow an eventual track car), so I actually managed to save a bit of money compared to my old steed. Top speed and acceleration were the least important criteria for me in a family hauler. Personally, I have always liked the appearance of Range Rovers, and the '03 model is beautifully styled inside and out. My wife gets more compliments on the RR's beauty than I do on my 993TT. Weird, but true.

I am sure that you can get an air suspension Cayenne S without having to go for the Turbo. It is not going to be as luxurious as the RR or my new G-wagen, or anything labled Lexus. The point of the Cayenne is supposed to be performance, it is a Porsche after all. In this case I think well rounded performance is the emphasis.

In the end, image is what sells most of these. Few people need an SUV. Making them super fast and good handling doesn't make much sense to me but, it sells.

I think the Cayenne will do very well. I also think that if I were to buy something like this I might just go for the Touareg and save $10k.

P-Seller is incorrect. In the recent issue of Fortune magazine there is an interview with Weideking and he is the one who says that they are all sold out. This isn't coming from Fortune magazine, this is coming from Porsche and it is a very CHEESY marketing ploy that may well backfire on them.

Porsche is planning to increase annual production from 25000 to 35000 - 40000. So, expect less exclusivity!

Sold out means probably that these minor downpayments are made for I-st year production run.

Is the Cayenne sold out? Heck no.
Has Porsche sold out? Sadly, yes.

Well, to continue the cruduty -- the looks will fade, but the tricks are hard to learn, so I might go with Cayenne.

I would go with the good looking one. Because as the years go on we all know you can't teach a dog new tricks.

A question before I decide: Which girl has more money?
