This must be Friable Freddie's worst nightmare...
[quote] suggested retail prices that "range from the low to mid $30,000 to about $60,000."...Considering that the sure-to-be-more-expensive Porsche Cayenne shares the same platform, transmission, suspension design and all-wheel-drive system and differs mainly in the engine, suspension tuning and the transfer case's torque split (the Porsche directs more power to the rear axle for sportier oversteer), it makes the Touareg seems even more cost effective.
Volkswagen expects to sell 25,000 Touaregs annually. It may be late to the party, but initial inspection says that all those loyal VW aficionados will snap them up promptly.

During a recession, in a wacky stock market, competing in a saturated SUV market, against a more cost effective version - Porsche expects to sell 25,000 units of the uglier version with a $20,000 premium? Oh right I keep forgeting - it's a Porsche (that will surely be a one syllable version )

Karl, it's just the herd mentality at work and why we have 20 car pile ups on a freeway.
Remember all those exotics getting ready to be built in the late 80's when the market dropped?
Porsche will be alright though, they've made sure this thing can share parts with a lawnmower if need be.

VW Touareg is pitched at BMW X5 / Merc ML
Cayenne is going up against Range Rover.
Call it snob value etc but there are enough Range Rover drivers over here who wouldn't buy a BMW/Merc to make the Cayenne a welcome alternative.
I'd also be very surprised if the suspension "tuning" isn't much more sophisticated on the P-Car despite component sharing. My bet is that although the platform is shared, the majority of testing and development work over the past couple of years has not been.

I will very interested to see how this is received. From what I understand, the first year of production is already sold. I think there will be some problems with this vehicle in the first year as with many first year vehicles but especially since this is a NEW platform, with a NEW engine, being built at a NEW factory, in the former EAST Germany.
That being said, I am not bashing the Cayenne or Porsche. I hope they take this engine and get back into racing which I have a sneaking suspicion they will do. They may enter the Cayenne into the Paris-Dakar rally which will do wonders for their prestige if they win.
I may buy one to tow my TT to track events with the slicks and tools I like, unhook both and track them both. We'll see.

Toyota manages to sell Lexus cars built on a Toyota base.
Nissan manages to sell Infinity cars built on a Nissan base.
VW Passat uses mostly Audi running gear.
GM sold the Cimmaron as a Cadillac
The Cayenne will sell, make no mistake about it.
