Post Printed rumor

Noticed in Car and Driver.
Information Dirt Road, Page 34, last article.
"Stories from Germany have it that the next Porsche 911 will have the company's new 4.5-liter V-8 engine from the Cayenne SUV in place of the current flat-six. Although we've heard the V-8 rumor for some time, earlier reports predicted a mid-engine layout. It appears now that the new engine will be lonngitudinally mounted in the rear - the classic 911 position."
I want one for use in the 928, but I guess whichever chassis Porsche blesses with the new engine will be a sought after commodity.
Think I can put one in a Taurus Wagon? <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" /> <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" /> <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

I've seen this rumor in a couple of places, and there are some others that it will actually be a smaller/lighter V8 or flat-8. It does seem likely that the future 911 (997 or whatever) will have an 8-cylinder engine of some sort. I guess Porsche realizes that everyone is going to have 400 HP cars in the near future, and that it might not be able to squeeze that out of the current flat-6 without a turbo.

what excites me as much or more than an 8-cylinder 911 is a more powerful Boxster. Moving the 911 to the 400 HP range makes it easier for Porsche to produce a 300+ HP Boxster. A Boxster S with the current 3.6/320 HP motor would be very sweet indeed.

Yes, I know that Ruf offers this, and that others will do a transplant, but it's not the same thing as a model from Porsche. $90+K for a Ruf 3600S that I can't just drop off at the local dealer isn't what I'm interested in.
