Default 2005 Faulty temp gauge

I just noticed that my temp gauge is not working and it just stays to the left hand side of the gauge even after driving for 30 mins or so. Also noticed the Emission Control warning light(Check Engine) light on, and the fan stays on for about 5 mins after engine is shut off. I live in North Ca, and it's been pretty cool here.

Have anybody exp. this before? Any help is deeply appreciated.
My pig is a 2005 v6 with 33000 miles.

I'd suspect a faulty Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. It's a very common failure on the VR6 engine, and it will cause the fan to remain on high, as a precaution because it cannot ascertain the actual engine temperature. The first step, of course will be to scan it, and find out what fault code you have.

This did happened one other time a few months ago when it got really cold outside, and it went away a few days later, not sure if it was related to the weather but I did have the heater on high.

Thanks for the reply Tim.

could it be low on coolant and not touching one of the probes? I'm guessing here because I've not researched any of the cooling system yet.

Default faulty sensor

Found this thread and thought I'd post the question.. Had my 05 Cayenne turbo at the mechanic for occasionally running hot. Mechanic is convinced its a faulty temperature guage on the cluster as he replaced the cluster with GTS cluster and temperature was normal. This was after switching out thermostat, water pump, radiator, computer etc. Diagnostics Computer also reads high, +_105 degrees. Wanted to hear everybody's opinion before replacing cluster. Also, anybody know best place I can source quality used cluster in the states?

Mine was the temp sensor. Pain to replace top of engine all comes out on a turbo...
