Porsche Golf Tees Up

The days of having to wait for a Lottery win may be over. Porsches could soon become much more accessible to customers following news of a dramatic move downmarket. The German manufacturer is believed to be on the verge of a radical shift in direction, with plans to head into the family car sector with a model based on the next-generation Volkswagen Golf.
Auto Express can reveal secret research plans for the marque to branch out into fresh markets – one in the shape of a 'Porsche for the people', and another under the guise of an all-wheel-drive super-tourer for the family buyer.

The people's Porsche that is currently under research would be based around the platform of the next Golf. A range of four and six-cylinder engines are being discussed, combined with a price in the region of £24,000. In spirit, the new model will be a successor to the unloved 924, but whether it will take on the form of a roadster or a sporty hatchback remains to be seen. The news should come as no surprise. The Stuttgart maker has already joined forces with auto giant VAG – given the close ties the two enjoy – to build the advanced SUV, which is nearing completion. Beyond this, a mind-blowing estate is on the cards, which rekindles memories of the still-born '989' project. This was to be a four-door version of the 911 and, although spy pictures broke of the practical sports car in 1991, it never made it into the showrooms.

This time around, though, Porsche is considering building a 'super estate' which would be priced above the regular 911 Carrera family. It is likely to feature a V8 powerplant with a four-wheel-drive system. However, a top spokesman from the company's headquarters claimed that plans for the new Golf-based model are merely speculation – but such is the secrecy of the project that any early leaks of information will inevitably be denied by both parties.

Oh please let it not be. Porsche moving downmarket? Wait, there are already downmarket Porsches, they're called Volkswagons. Seriously, if Porsche moves downmarket they might as well get swallowed into VAG, they will basically be the same thing, why compete? They have good ties anyways.

The future doesn't look to rosy for my favorite of marques.
