Post Newby question about AWD reduction

There are three lights by the AWD reduction toggle thing (highway at bottom and mountains at top). I can push it up when in nuetral and etc. and get the middle light and the top light to illuminate. When I toggle the switch back toward the highway, the dot in the rear differential on the trip computer and the back dot by the highway sign does not illuminate. Should it? Whay does it mean if it did. Too lazy to read books.

There are two stages on the switch. The first engages the reduction gear. This is useful for creeping slowly over unever terrain or moving gingerly over someone's lawn (so I've heard ;~). The second stage is locking the differential which isn't something you would generally do. It's useful in some fairly specific situations but, generally, you'll want the traction management software to decide how much torque to send where.
