Question Powder coating/Anodizing Cayenne Trim?

With a TT on the boat (left port 3/18/03), I think I have roughly two weeks to make the big decision to close the deal. I must admit that I have my reservations, most of which have been mentioned in previous posts (sometimes to excess). The final decision ultimately rests on the test drive (I haven’t found a dealer with an unsold TT on the lot).

One thing I haven’t been able to overcome is the silver window trim molding. After talking to the Porsche parts manager, I’m told that much of the trim is plastic! “Parts man” informed me that it could all be powercoated, but the dealer doesn’t do it. After several calls to local shops specializing in such, I am told it can’t be done (powdercoating requires temperatures to 400 degrees). One shop said they could “liquid” them (kind of painting?) with something as strong as powercoating.

Does anyone have any advice (besides buying a FX 45, Range Rover or …)?

The Newbie awaits your wisdom.

Im right there with you... I don't care for it either, so its one of those things that either grows on you or it doesn't.. I would see if you could get your hands on a piece of molding, maybe just buy one piece. Then take it to the body shop/powdercoater. Worse case senario is your out a few bucks, I'd hate to see you strip all of the molding and then in turns out bad. Cause its all over..

Have you guys tried the "exclusive department" ?
Your dealer should be able to hook you up with the special wishes department at Porsche so they built your car to your specs...I'm sure they can do it factory especialy ordering a TT...

My dealer confirmed "no exclusive" for the Cayenne. What do you expect for 100k...

here's what i was thinking of doing,

order all the trim peices from the parts desk (prob a Looong wait for them).
since they are all plastic the easiest and best looking thing to do would be to have them hand stripped (no solvents since they are plastic)
primed and painted body color.
i would not recomend powder coating as the finish is Ok for under body peices but is not really high enough quality for this application. it's made to be tough not pretty.
anodizing is also out since it works on only the ALum. peices - these are plastic for the most part.
the trim peices should be realitvely easy to remove since these would be replaced if you had any body work done on the car. i.e. fender bender or worse. as such they will also probebly not be 100% re-usable (chances are some will break when removed)
all IMHO - have not done this of course with the cayenne.

One spirited drive and you'll forget all about the exterior (I did). If you don't forget about it, you didn't drive it fast enough! Try again.

Given some time, I am certain either the factory or an aftermarket tuner will offer replacement pieces in carbon fiber, real metal, wood, etc. So, if you like the car enough to put up with it for now, you should be able to replace it fairly soon.

It is unfortunate that this continues to be a problem in high-end cars. The quality of the plastic trim in my 2000 Mercedes S500 was substandard as well.

Speaking of after market, anyone know a very good Invinca-Shield dealer in Chicago/Midwest. With no kit I need an EXPERT!

Still looking for a solution to the "silver window trim"

Just got my first bid on painting the trim out. $800.00! The dealer said the reason it is so expensive is that no one has ever one before.

Am I still the only one looking into this?

Surf,

I havent looked into it but lemme know what you find. Did you get a quote to paint it to match or black it out? I'm not sure if I'd get it a dull black or get it in basalt black, if I did it...

Scott,

Good question! Having not seen the car yet, I'm not sure what they quoted. The dealer had the shop come by to see the demo. I'm assuming he quoted basalt black, but I'll hopefully get another number tomorrow and verify color.

Thanks!
