Default Source for Crossdrilled or Slotted Rotors?

I am in the process of sourcing parts for a brake job on my '05 Cayenne S, and want to use slotted or crossdrilled rotors but have been unable to find a source in the forum.

I did find one vendor on eBay but apparently they take solid Zimmermann's and machine them. I am not sure how that would affect the integrity of the rotors.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170554097678&ssPageName=ADME:X:EAC:MOTORS:3160
Does anyone have a good source for slotted or crossdrilled rotors or have experience with ones that have been machined?

TIA

And why do you want them cross drilled?

Harvey, like you I scoured the internet looking for cross-drilled rotors for the Cayenne and after speaking to many vendors and mechanics, I was told that machining stock or aftermarket rotors may eventually cause fatigue cracks.

If you really want cross-drilled rotors, go the route of custom-made stainless-steel units as they will last a long time however, you may have to sell your first-born or re-finance the Cayenne to buy them.

So called "drilled rotors" are cast with holes and machined after casting. Drilling holes in a plain rotors results in stress risers and cracking of the rotor.

Right ... just using the common terminology.

To get the cross-drilled look, you can do some parts bin engineering and put 996 GT3 front rotors on the S.

There is a reason Porsche didn't use drilled discs on Cayenne. Drilled discs are not used on offroad cars. If you stay on tarmac, you can change to drilled discs, but it doesn't make your car better.

Default drilled vs slotted

the functional reason for both is to allow hot gasses from the pads to escape, hopefully reducing pad transfer. Pad transfer is what many incorrectly refer to as warped rotors.

Slotted rotors are structurally superior to "drilled". Slotted are also a lot less messy regarding brake pad dust.

I run RSS GiroDisc rotors on my 997.1 C2S. I will be changing the rotors on my 2009 Cayenne S to slotted when replacement time comes.

I bought some Ebay drilled and coated zimmermans a couple of years ago. The guys were up in New Jersey if I remember right. They have been really good, no cracking, no warping, excellent stopping power. Have a protective coating on hat and edge so no rusting etc. I would buy them again in a heartbeat. Probably put 15,000 miles on them so far and they still look like new.
