Default Ordering Coolant Pipes, water pump too??

I'm getting ready to place an order for the coolant pipe kit, I've already got the serpentine belt (Conti) so I will be doing that WIIT.

Should I consider doing the water pump at the same time? How frequently do they fail? Search hasn't shown many failures I've found.

Not touching the starter, pipes aren't leaking yet.

I'll also do spark plugs and check condition of coil packs while I'm at it.

Want to do this before the hot weather gets here and I need to make another trip to FL soon.

One of our PCA guys has a tool for sucking the coolant in/air out of the 996 system, would it work on the Cayenne (is there a fitting for it)?

TIA

MXQuattro posted this in the main Coolant Pipe thread, outstanding:

I asked this question a short while ago on the water pump, I got answers of around the 100k mark they had failures.

I think it was this thread and others maybe?

Yes.
And WIIT, I would also check the alternator (leaks...water cooled, just like the starter) and also the power steering pump.

I'm going to go ahead and replace the water pump (retail ~210.00, Hennessey ~120.00, + gasket ~4.00) WIIT and give the alt. a look over (don't expect a problem there).

I don't think the starter is water cooled, I think it only gets bathed in water if I wait too long to do this.

Std. Coolant Pipe parts from Hennesey in Atlanta are ~495 but I'm having them leave out the coolant since it has to be shipped HazMat and adds to shipping and I can get that locally.

I'll also do water pump, serp. belt, plugs/coil packs WIIT.

Now watch the Cardian (sp?) Shaft go out after I'm done.........

William Sr, I've had them done and most likely will have to do them again some day. Oh, and I had to replace the starter as well

PS. AND the water pump!

The water pump on my 04 CS was replaced by the previous owner at 40k miles... at 70k now and it's fine... not sure of the widespread nature of water pump failures, but you might want to replace if you plan to keep the car for a long time..

Porsche upgraded water pump in early 2006 (from what I've heard it was in Feb 2006), unless your Cayenne was built after that I would replace it while in there.

Been naked for almost a year now. They had 6 yrs to fail but it didn't, I know I'm pushing my luck.

Hey, there have been more than a few threads I was getting ready to post something in only to find I'd already posted it. The mind is a terrible thing.....

In the sticky thread on Coolant Pipes at the top of the forum look for a post by "JohnnyBahama", he has the instructions for getting the authentic Porsche Service Procedure. It will cost you less than $10 to download 3 or 4 articles.

I think mine's a Aug. '05 production date IIRC so mine must have the old style.

little tip, be very very careful tightening the water pump bolts when reinstalling. I dont remember the exact spec but remember they were light. Thought i snugged one but I guess my light and Porsche light were different values.
