Corrosion of Rear License Plate Lamps
Thought that I'd share this with my Cayenne brethren...
Over the last few months, I noticed that the license plate illumination was not as bright as it was when I first purchased the GTS. Just the other day, the right side lamp conked out so I decided to remove the lamp ***'y in order to replace the bulb.
Once out and upon closer inspection, the entire ***'y was found corroded beyond repair as well as one of the plastic retaining rivets melted. I pulled the other lamp to find the identical situation happening. The clear lenses are also completely covered in a rust-type of dark red film.
Since the GTS is covered under the original warranty, I'll be having the dealer replace them on my next service visit however, it's just one more thing to check on the P!G before getting stopped by law enforcement for a blacked out licence plate.

When I was cleaning my03 I noticed the same thing. Removed them and could see that the edges of the metal that the assembly fits in had rust all along the cut (from factory) sharp edges. I was totally surprised. I think that when it gets a little warmer I'll pull them out and put some rust stop stuff on it to try and slow it down.

Flea-Bay sells LED lamp ***'ys for the rear license plate. The seller claims that they are CanBus compatible and 100% error-code free.... I wonder what Larry would say to that? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-Caye...item3f0c867394

I just pulled mine and clean them up. Looked new when I got done. Be sure they are dry when you put them back in. The rust just settles on the lense and can be wiped off.
