Because a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away, the Evil Emporer Dr W stated on many occasions that there would never be a diesel Porsche (no, don't bring up history...I already know).
So, he directed his Clone army, under the supervision of the Marketing Sith Lords, to spend billions developing, on his OEM, the Porsche Cayenne hybrid.
Now that the hybrid is a public failure, they simply have to force it to sell by limiting diesel availability.
Next question...

For some silly reason many believe diesel technology hasn't changed in 20 years. Slowly suspect people are getting it. But think heard the diesel Cayenne will come to the states. Enjoy your Cayenne diesel.

As soon as PAG sells off enough of the amassed hybrid parts to help "justify" the investment (i.e. bury the mistake), then the diesels will come to the US.
In the meantime, they don't want to offer both, since the vast majority would pick the diesel over the hybrid.
don't worry, it will happen, but you will have to wait....or buy an Audi or VW SUV ... same engine.

Lewis, why cannot they sell the totally green hybrids to the gubmint? They seem to be the largest buyer of the totally, totally green all electric POS's!

We have had a diesel of some sort or another in the fleet almost continually since the 70's -- currently have a BMW.
They attract a certain buyer willing to pay a premium for both the car and the fuel -- not always a winning formula. They could sell more VW wagons -- it's a great engine for a wagon -- but they have a limited appeal in the performance market
I think the BMW is a blast to drive -- most who drive ours don't.

Tell that to the cars behind the Audi R18 at Le Mans! ![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
I had a BMW 530D which was a blast to drive. Slightly slower than 3.0i and 3.3i 0-60 but faster than both 50-70
Don't you just love that torque.

gave the oil burner back today. i filled it up and drove 110 km's back to the dealership half back roads and half autobahn. had it up to 230kph briefly and not a problem. at the dealership, the needle was still over 4/4 mark.
i have driven the X5 diesel and its an appliance compared to the cayenne. really enjoyed it. has me thinking of maybe getting a base gas V6 for a stuff hauler. how does the base cayenne behave? I like that you can actually order it with a manual transmission still although the 8-speed was great.

I got 52.1 avg mpg on my 65 mile commute home yesterday in my 2010 VW Golf TDi daily driver.
Yes, diesels are unattractive to Americans.
I only wish they brought the 75mpg VW Polo to the US .. oh well.
